Will Smith Disgusting Habit Revealed By Men In Black Director
Throughout his career, Will Smith has been known by a lot of titles including an actor, a rapper, and thanks to his infamous confrontation with Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, a slapper. In a recent appearance on the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast, Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld revealed that Will Smith can also be known as something far more illustrious than his previous titles: a faster.
With the legendary actor’s reputation to pass gas at the most inopportune times, Will Smith can even brag that he once let out a fart so wretched that cleared out a set entirely for three hours.
Will Smith’s Flatulence
The revelation of Will Smith’s propensity to fart arose when Sonnenfeld was just getting comfortable during his appearance on the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast. As they were easing into the hour-long conversation, host Kelly Ripa asked Sonnenfeld about his “number one crazy story” while working on the Men in Black original trilogy. After a brief moment, Sonnenfeld thought of one particular gas-filled moment that pops into his mind first.
The Scene In Question
The story involves a scene that Will Smith and co-star Tommy Lee Jones were preparing to film on the set of Men in Black. While painting the complete picture of the story, Sonnenfeld describes Jones as a man “who does not suffer fools” when filming a scene, but he maintained nothing but mutual respect for Will Smith, farts and all.
So when the two actors were called to film a scene in which their characters are inside a futuristic car that has the ability to drive upside down inside a tunnel, the potential for a gassy disaster was at a critical high.
Tommy Lee Jones Played It Cool
Just moments after the two actors were locked into place in what Sonnenfeld describes as a “device” that was essentially “hermetically sealed” to film the scene, Will Smith’s fart habit reared its ugly head at the worst possible time.
“I say, ‘Roll camera.’ And I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry,'” Sonnenfeld recounted. “And you hear Tommy saying, ‘That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.'” Without any clue as to what happened, Sonnenfeld and the rest of the crew raced over to the prop car to help the two actors to find out what had gone wrong.
A Very Stinky Blend
“And what happened was, Will Smith is a farter. It’s just some people are,” Sonnenfeld said while laughing. “And you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart.”
As Ripa pressed Sonnenfeld for more details regarding the fallout of the unfortunate gas release, the filmmaker revealed that the entire crew was forced to evacuate the entire set for about three hours while they waited for the stench to finally dissipate. As Ripa speculated as to why Will Smith would fart so much or so horrifically, Sonnenfeld simply noted that the actor’s diet is high in protein and healthy oils while cutting out all carbs.
Men In Black
Despite the occasional set-clearing Will Smith fart, Men in Black would go on to become the third-highest grossing film in 1997, raking in close to $600 million at the worldwide box office. The sci-fi comedy also cemented Will Smith as a certified movie star and put him on the path to becoming one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
