Fans of the comic book hero Hellboy will soon be able to view the latest film adaptation, Hellboy: The Crooked Man when it’s released to digital-at-home next month. The film can be pre-ordered now through Amazon for $19.99 ahead of its October 4 release date. Unlike the other cinematic adaptations of the comics and graphic novels, this version is said to depart from the available films and give audiences “an authentic version” of its creator’s stories on the screen.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set to take place in the 1950s and centers around a rookie BPRD agent who joins forces with Hellboy to take on one of the Devil’s soul collectors known as the Crooked Man. The unlikely duo battle the forces of darkness as they invade a rural community in the heart of Appalachia amid a storyline that is said to “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.

First Story In Chronological Order

Though released two decades after the first film, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is chronologically the first in the film franchise. Two animated feature films, Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms (2006) and Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron, take place in the two years before the first film, while the 2019 reboot takes place in 2017, though its prologue is set in 517 CE and there’s a flashback to 1992.

The Cast

Hellboy: The Crooked Man casts Adeline Rudolph as Bobbie Jo Song, the rookie agent that pairs up with the title character hero. Jack Kesy (Murder at Hollow Creek, The Manifestation, Baywatch) takes over the Hellboy role from David Harbour, who played the part in the reboot five years ago. The film also stars Jefferson White (Yellowstone, Civil War, Eileen), Leah McNamera (Vikings, The Gentlemen, Normal People), and Martin Bassingdale (Masters of the Air) as the Crooked Man.

From A Ghost Rider Director

Hellboy: The Crooked Man has Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance filmmaker Brian Taylor in the director’s chair in one of his first feature films since he helped bring Johnny Blaze to roaring life in 2011. Taylor has racked up a good amount of screenwriting credits in the last 15 years, including 18 episodes of the television series Happy! (of which he directed nine episodes), Jonah Hex, and Crank: High Voltage. Tayor shares screenwriting credits for this latest endeavor with Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola.

Fans will remember Mignola for serving as the screenwriter for the original Hellboy film in 2004, but also for being the creator of the comic book character. He also penned the scripts for multiple Hellboy video games as well as the Batman: Gotham by Gaslight graphic novel.

Hellboy first landed in movie theaters in 2004 under the direction of Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro. The first installment starred Ron Perlman as the title character, along with Selma Blair and Doug Jones. The trio of stars reprised their roles four years later when Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released, again with del Toro at the helm.
