If you’re looking for a criminally underrated movie to check out this weekend, be sure to watch 2021’s Last Night In Soho, which is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. The movie, which was praised by critics but still bombed at the box office, offers an all-star cast, a compelling and anxiety-inducing narrative, and some truly mind-boggling special effects that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Last Night In Soho also serves as the most recent release from experimental filmmaker Edgar Wright, who is best known for delivering acclaimed projects like Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

For those who missed this one when it first premiered, the narrative of Last Night In Soho centers on a troubled teenage girl named Ellie Turner, who obsesses over the art and fashion of London’s ‘Swinging Sixties’ era.

Despite being incredibly naive and living a mostly sheltered life, Ellie ventures off to London to study fashion at a prestigious college. Once she arrives, she quickly begins to hone her craft as a fashion designer and seamstress, though she becomes a victim of bullying from the other students, especially her cruel roommate Jocasta.

London’s Dark Underworld

After departing her school-assigned dorm room to board with an elderly woman named Ms. Collins, Ellie begins having nightmares and visions of her surroundings as they appeared during the 60s. Specifically, her visions follow a confident woman named Sandie, as she engages in a love affair with a local club owner.

As the visions become more intense, Ellie finds herself inspired by Sandie’s flair and sense of style, while also becoming sucked further and further into the twisted underworld of London’s nightclub business.

Unraveling A Murder

By the time the credits roll on Last Night In Soho, Ellie’s visions begin to uncover a cold case murder that occurred in real life, decades in the past. Though she can’t fully interpret or explain her visions, she races to bring the murderer to justice, while also struggling to remain tethered to the real world. The film’s plot is a bit difficult to truly describe without giving major details away, but rest assured that Edgar Wright manages to expertly deliver on his intended premise.

Production And Cast

Wright initially dreamed up the concept of Last Night In Soho back in 2007, before finally bringing his draft to fruition with the help of 1917 scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns in 2016. After the success of Edgar Wright’s 2017 outing Baby Driver, the filmmaker decided to take his next project in an extremely different direction, by finally bringing Last Night In Soho to life on the big screen.

Thomasin McKenzie puts on a show-stopping performance as Ellie in the film, while Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, Rita Tushingham, and Murder Mystery‘s Terence Stamp round out the cast.

REVIEW SCORE

As stated, critics quickly fell in love with Last Night In Soho, due in large part to its deep performances, massive set-pieces, and expertly-crafted visual effects. Unfortunately, the film’s 2021 release left it destined to fail, as movie theaters were still reeling at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

Last Night In Soho is said to have taken in just $23 million against an estimated production budget of over $43 million, making it a certifiable bomb. Still, it performed relatively well in comparison to similarly timed releases.

If you’re interested in streaming Last Night In Soho today, be sure to pull the movie up on Amazon Prime Video.
