The Hollywood rumor mill is in full swing after a leak about the untitled Star Wars Rey movie. According to that leak, the film has been paused, leading to further speculation that scrapping it altogether is being considered. With no official information available, all of this speculation should be taken with a big grain of salt.

On Hold

Numerous sources around the web have reported on the information leaked by Daniel Richtman on his Patreon. According to Richtman, the Star Wars Rey movie in the works is currently “on hold” and unlikely to enter shooting before 2025. With so many projects in the works for the franchise, a delay wouldn’t be unimaginable, but there’s been no official announcement about the movie from Lucasfilm.

Hiding That It’s Canceled?

Some sites have speculated that the Star Wars Rey movie has been canceled altogether, based on Richtman’s leak. These claims should be treated as rumors rather than genuine reports, as even Richtman’s unverified leaks made no mention of the film being scrapped. It’s not uncommon for productions to fall apart before shooting begins, but until there’s an official is announced fans should assume the film is still being worked on.

What We Know About The Rey Movie

Picking up years after Star Wars Episode IX and centering on a new Jedi Order, the Rey movie was announced in May of 2023. When it was first announced, Damon Lindelof was attached, but it’s now being written by Steven Knight and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The film has never received a potential release date and details about pre-production have been few and far between.

Other Projects Up In The Air

Several Star Wars projects have been announced with no release date or production information, just like the Rey movie. Other untitled movies include a Dave Filoni film about the New Republic, a James Mangold project about the origins of the Jedi, and mysterious films from Shawn Levy and Taika Waititi. In addition to the numerous film projects, the Lando series announced in 2020 has been left in limbo, but is now reported as being reworked as a movie.

With so many projects in unconfirmed states of pre-production, rumors about Star Wars have gone wild and the Ray movie is no exception. Rumors about the movie being canceled have circulated frequently, likely fueled in part by the divisive nature of the franchise’s sequel trilogy. Similar rumors have appeared about the Taika Waititi-directed film, but with no confirmation.

What’s Next

It’s clear that the Star Wars Rey movie isn’t coming to theaters anytime soon, and its fate may hinge on the success of confirmed projects. Disney+ is set to receive a new series, Skeleton Crew, in December with a new season of Andor coming out next year and another season of Ahsoka in the works. The franchise is set to return to theaters on May 22, 2026 with The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The truth is, it’s impossible to say what the status of the Star Wars Rey movie is with any certainty. With blockbuster films struggling to find success at the box office and audiences getting burned out on sprawling franchises, the project could be on the chopping block. However, until there’s an official announcement, any news about the project should be treated as a rumor rather than fact.
