Netflix Mystery Redefines The World’s Greatest Detective
In the nearly 140-year span since the character of Sherlock Holmes was first written into existence by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the world’s greatest detective has received countless adaptations in film, television, and numerous written works. Certain iterations of Batman have been explicitly based on Holmes’ acute detective work, while two front-and-center MCU actors have portrayed Holmes in live-action since the turn of the century. One 2020 mystery film, however, completely recontextualizes the world of Sherlock, by centering his younger sister, Enola Holmes, in her own mystery-solving adventure.

As Enola continues tugging on the thread of her mother’s mysterious disappearance, she uncovers a network of conspiracies larger than anything she could have possibly imagined, stumping the brain power of the local authorities, as well as her older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft.

I won’t give away the whole of Enola Holmes‘ plot here, though suffice it to say, the film offers a fun and engaging adventure for audiences everywhere. The film was well received by critics and audiences alike, despite having premiered during the dead of the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2020.
Though Enola Holmes was initially scheduled for a theatrical release, COVID restrictions resulted in the film premiering directly on Netflix, where it rapidly climbed to the top of the streaming charts. Today, the film maintains a near-perfect 91 percent certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Earned Itself Trilogy Status
Critics specifically highlighted the performances as high watermarks for praise, including that of Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter. Enola Holmes managed to be such a success that a subsequent sequel premiered on Netflix in 2022, and a third film in the franchise is currently in preproduction with a slated release of 2025.
