They Turned Spin The Bottle Into A Horror Movie And We Can’t Stop Laughing

By Doug Norrie | Published

When it comes to horror movies, sometimes it feels like we are playing some weird form of mad-libs, where the title and theme of the film are built on random words or games. Such is the case with Spin the Bottle, a new horror movie that sure sounds like they came up with the title first and worked out the rest of the script a lot later.

Spin the Bottle comes with many of the time-honored horror tropes attached and ready to be put to “good” use. There’s a group of teenagers who go to a (maybe) haunted house to engage in all manner of teenage debauchery. They play, you guessed it, spin the bottle, which is all fun and games until someone ends up dead/ missing.

Here, check out the trailer for Spin the Bottle yourself and see what we are talking about.

Pretty much what you were expecting? Yeah, us, too. Couldn’t keep a straight face at any point during this hokey mess? Us either. This is a horror movie that appears super light on any kind of story and just wants to make its horror bones on enough jump scares to keep you interested.

Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that all of the “teenagers” look like they are in their mid-20s and are super attractive. Again, all of the things we are used to with horror films.

Spin the Bottle has the Texas teens play the game in a house, someone gets killed and now one of the other kids is a suspect. Why? Because his family seems to have been into all kinds of screwed-up stuff in the past, and now the cops (Justin Long) think it’s all connected. Is it? Who cares really? Let’s just see everyone run around scared for 90 minutes.

When it comes to horror movies like this, it’s sometimes tough to know if the movie makers and writers (in this case Gavin Wiesen and John Cregan) were taking the assignment seriously or going a little tongue-in-cheek for the plot device, script, etc. I’m leaning toward the idea that they are in on the joke, but it’s not totally clear.

That being said, we’ve seen movies a lot thinner than something like Spin the Bottle turn into major movie franchises, especially when there’s a horror vibe to it. So stranger things and all.

After all, we got a whole franchise out of kids who cheated death, only to mostly get killed later by death. Final Destination, anyone?

Speaking of Final Destination, Ali Larter appears in this movie, and the rest of the Spin the Bottle cast includes Tanner Stine, Kaylee Kaneshiro, Emily Skinner, Hal Cumpston, and a bunch of other relatively new faces.

Spin the Bottle is set to release digitally on October 4th and has about a month to grab fans in the run-up to Halloween. That is if they can stop laughing first.
