The Goonies Fans Get Disappointing Sequel News
These days, legacy sequels seem to hit theaters for every franchise, from Indiana Jones to Beetlejuice to Top Gun and beyond. While some rumors have surfaced online confirming that the smash hit 1985 comedy adventure The Goonies would be next to get the legacy sequel treatment, multiple actors have come forward to shut these rumors down.
According to recent reporting, there are absolutely no active talks of a Goonies 2 taking place in Hollywood- at least not between any of the original cast and crew.
Too Good To Be True?
If you’ve been online at all in the last week or so, you’ve likely been inundated with reports that an upcoming Goonies sequel was confirmed to be in production, with nearly every major cast member attached to reprise their roles.
While many fans were overjoyed at this news, it turned out to be too good to be true, according to social media posts from Martha Plimpton. Plimpton, who played Stef in the classic film, revealed the truth via Instagram, with a clear and direct message that “there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”
Martha Plimpton Shoots It Down
Martha Plimpton concluded her rant on the subject of a Goonies sequel with a call to action for fans in the real world, demanding that more young people get out and check their voter registration for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Likewise, The Goonies legend Corey Feldman took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that no such sequel is in the works as far as he is aware, and took the opportunity to promote a new project titled The Birthday.
No Hope For Goonies Reunion?
As far as any real insider can tell, speculation that The Goonies is getting a sequel seems to be a run-of-the-mill online hoax. The last time serious talks were made about a Goonies 2 entering production was in 2014.
At that time, original Goonies director Richard Donner was open about getting the original cast together and whipping up a fresh script, though the project ultimately never got off the ground.
Hope for a sequel essentially withered out completely in 2021 when Donner passed away at the age of 91, though many fans would still be overjoyed to see the grown-up gang back together.
Goonies And The Pirate Treasure
For those who missed the classic piece of 80s Americana, The Goonies centered on a band of misfit kids as they embark upon a fantastic adventure to uncover a hidden trove of pirate treasure buried in a cave beneath their Astoria, Oregon neighborhood.
As they traverse an underground system of caves loaded with bronze-age booby traps, the kids are pursued by a trio of vicious criminals intent on stealing the treasure for themselves by any means necessary.
Many members of the cast have gone on to appear in massive films and television series, including The Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin, Everything Everywhere All At Once‘s Ke Huy Quan, The Sopranos‘ Joe Pantoliano, and even Marvel’s Thanos himself, Josh Brolin.
Unlikely To Happen
Unfortunately, the likelihood of a sequel to The Goonies cropping up now seems nonexistent, which is a real shame because Sean Astin once said that he’d bet his children on the sequel coming to fruition.
Luckily, he probably won’t need to make good on that well-intentioned promise, as the Fratellis brothers are still safely behind bars.
