Zack Snyder Is Back On Netflix With A God Of War Ripoff

Just a week before the series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix, the streamer has decided to finally unveil the full trailer for Twilight of the Gods, the highly-anticipated animated series from Zack Snyder. The story, however, might sound like a God of War rip-off; check out the trailer below:

The trailer for Twilight of the Gods features all of Zack Snyder’s biggest trademarks: slow motion, stunning visuals, and epic story arcs, though this particular one might seem like a God of War rip-off to some.

Twilight of the Gods centers on a story that draws inspiration from Norse mythology and features a vengeful Thor—not the Marvel kind—and a scheming Loki. The protagonists of the show, however, aren’t the two rivaling deities but Sigrid, a fierce warrior who saves King Leif in battle and agrees to marry him afterward.

This angers Thor, for whatever reason, who crashes their wedding night and butchers their friends and family. Sigrid and Leif, along with a crew of crusaders, set out on a mission for vengeance.

There aren’t many similarities between the IPs, but for those who played the original GoW trilogy, the gods were basically responsible for the death of Kratos’ wife and daughter, which set the Ghost of Sparta on a path of vengeance against the entire Greek pantheon. It was not until later that God of War turned its gaze towards Norse mythology, where Kratos also battles Thor.

However, that’s where all similarities between Twilight of the Gods and God of War ended, and the new trailer has unveiled details that shed more light on Sigrid’s motivation and her ruthless path for vengeance. In the end, both she and Leif are two warriors who, through Thor’s own engineering, have been left with very little to lose. This explains Loki’s appearance in the trailer, as both Sigrid and Leif apparently don’t mind reaching out to the Trickster God to find a way to help in taking down Thor.

Twilight of the Gods is scheduled to release on September 19 this year, and it could be a real palette cleanser, not only for Snyder fans but for all of us who like to occasionally engage with his work. This is especially true following the critically panned Rebel Moon or Army of the Dead.

Let’s be honest: the former wasn’t actually that bad—not everything has to be overly complex and emotionally deep—while the latter, admittedly, could’ve been better. Whatever the case may be, Snyder’s entire tenure at Netflix hasn’t really been a highlight of his career thus far.

Perhaps Twilight of the Gods provides the critical high marks the director needs right now. In the end, animation is a fantastic medium, especially since it encourages boundary-pushing, has fewer guardrails, and very little limitation in terms of what can be done.

This is particularly true when that animation project has been backed by an imaginative mind such as Snyder’s—who had an Army of the Dead animated project in mind, as well—and Netflix’s exorbitant budget.
