Game Of Thrones’ Biggest Star Still Loves Its Hated Finale
Peter Dinklage became a household name thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones, and he has continued to enjoy immense career success long after the show aired its final episode. That success is doubly impressive because that show had an infamously awful final season that culminated in arguably the worst series finale of all time. That’s why we were so shocked when the acclaimed actor recently reaffirmed how much he enjoyed the controversial last episode, enthusiastically telling Rolling Stone, “I like the finale!”
Tyrion Lannister
In the show, Peter Dinklage plays Tyrion Lannister, a wise character who always knows just what to say. The star seemed to recently channel his Game of Thrones persona: rather than try to justify his extremely hot take about the series finale, he simply pointed out that it’s “just my opinion” and how “you don’t have to agree with me.”
Furthermore, he noted that there are very pragmatic reasons for him to openly share this opinion with the world.
No Reason To Lie
To this point, Peter Dinklage posed a hypothetical scenario about what would happen if he came out and said “I hated the finale” and agreed with the general fan consensus that Game of Thrones’ “whole last season was horrible.”
In his view, “that would sit much worse than if I said I loved it, which I did.” He seems to have a good point here—aside from affirming the opinion of some very disgruntled fans, what would him openly trashing the show that made him famous actually accomplish?
The Fun
Even though he enjoyed both the last season and the final episode, Peter Dinklage acknowledged the fan backlash and pointed out that it’s not necessarily a bad thing. He thinks that disagreement about Game of Thrones “makes what we do fun” for the simple reason that “everybody gets to write about it and chat about it and drink over it and argue about it.”
The veteran actor also acknowledged that he has “an old Irish way of looking at the world,” one that makes him view bickering fan discourse in a positive way.
Tay Tay Loves It
In Peter Dinklage’s mind, “There’s something wrong if everything’s OK.” He laughed after he said this, but his point is valid—if a show really does uniformly please the fandom, that means that it most likely embraced a winning formula long ago and never really tried anything new.
Certainly, if Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin had simply made all of his Song of Ice and Fire novels reskinned versions of the first book, the series wouldn’t have achieved so much worldwide acclaim.
It’s also worth noting that Peter Dinklage isn’t the only big name who happened to enjoy the final Game of Thrones season. The interviewer noted how musical superstar Taylor Swift was a major fan of the show and confessed to him that she enjoyed that last season.
Love her or hate her, The Tortured Poets Department singer is a major tastemaker, and her pop culture pronouncements carry just as much weight as the royal proclamations of Robert Baratheon.
We’re Not Convinced
Taylor Swift and Peter Dinklage may be the best team-up since Arya and The Hound, but even their combined might hasn’t really brought us around on Game of Thrones’ last season and lackluster finale.
The arbitrary character decisions and bizarre plot details remain baffling, and everything was bad enough to make us wonder why we wasted so many years obsessed with this show in the first place.
Tyrion Lannister may have famously said “I drink and I know things,” but that last season was awful enough that we’d much rather drink and forget everything we know about it.
