Supernatural Mystery Anime Gets Season 7 For Longtime Fans
Besides Shonen series, it’s pretty rare for anime to be made up of more than a couple of seasons, especially when they aren’t popular stories that focus on battles and epic fight scenes. Natsume’s Book of Friends, however, stands out from other long-lasting anime as a cute supernatural mystery aimed at younger women. Despite being a relatively relaxing slice-of-life anime, Natsume’s Book of Friends is soon to have a seventh season.
Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 7 streams on Crunchyroll on October 8.
Natsume’s Book of Friends is about Takashi Natsume (Hiroshi Kamiya), who has the unique ability to see and communicate with supernatural creatures. Because of this skill, he was often alone throughout his childhood, as many other kids his age thought he was weird. Even his family passed him around, unsure how to handle his behaviors.
However, when his grandmother, Reiko (Sanae Kobayashi) passes away, his life begins to change. She provides him with her Book of Friends, which is a book full of names of different spirits his grandmother knew and made her servants.
Natsume’s Book of Friends started off as a Shoujo manga by Yuki Midorikawa.
However, while the book helps Takashi to understand his abilities more, it also puts him in a lot of danger. Many spirits want the book, as it is a highly prized item, and Takashi’s life is often in danger because of his grandmother’s gift.
Natsume’s Book of Friends was originally a manga aimed at younger girls, known as Shoujo. It was first published in 2003 by Yuki Midorikawa and is still ongoing. Currently, there are a total of 30 volumes.
The anime adaptation started in 2008 and was produced by Brian’s Base Studio (To Your Eternity) with Takahiro Oomori (Princess Jellyfish) as the director, sound director, and storyboard.
In addition to the voice actors for Takashi and his grandmother, there are also names such as Akiko Yajima (InuYasha) as Kogitsune, Kazuhiko Inoue (Fruits Basket) as Madara, and Kazuma Horie (Durarara!!) as Kaname.
You can watch all six seasons of Natsume’s Book of Friends on Crunchyroll.
Season Seven of Natsume’s Book of Friends was announced as part of the 15th anniversary celebration for the anime in 2023. It’s rare for Shoujo to get a lot of seasons, so having Natsume’s Book of Friends get adapted so far is impressive.
The story is doing well for itself. Season one of the anime has an average score of 8.30 on My Anime List. It also has a popularity rating of 419, which puts it pretty high among other anime out there.
The following five seasons of Natsume’s Book of Friends managed to keep up the quality and story, with none of them dipping below 8.31 on My Anime List as far as their average score.
Season Seven of Natsume’s Book of Friends isn’t all that far away. It’s set to air in Japan on October 8. Crunchyroll also announced that it will simulcast the season, which will allow international fans to watch the episodes at the same time.
The previous six seasons of Natsume’s Book of Friends are all on Crunchyroll as well. However, they aren’t quite as organized as most other shows on the platform are. Seasons One through Three are on one page, and all are considered one season made up of 39 episodes. Meanwhile, Seasons Four, Five, and Six each have their own pages. The same will likely be true of Season Seven when it releases.
