Outrageous Comedy Series On Hulu Brings Hilarious Stand-Up Star’s Stories To Life

By TeeJay Small | Published

If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, you’re likely familiar with the name Jim Jefferies. The hilarious Australian comedian has been delivering stand-up specials, television appearances, and other entertainment ventures since the early 2000s, and is often characterized by his irreverent humor, crude language, and off-beat insight into American politics and culture from a foreign perspective. One of Jim Jefferies’ greatest projects to date is the television series Legit, which sees the comedian portraying a fictionalized version of himself as he struggles to get his career off the ground.

Legit’s Legendary 2-Season Run

Legit 2013

Legit first aired on FX from 2013 through 2014, and lasted only 2 seasons. The series was created and developed for television by Jim Jefferies along with producer Peter O’Fallon, and written by the duo alongside Rick Cleveland and Chris Chase. O’Fallon also served as the director for all 26 episodes of the show. If you’re a long-time fan of Jefferies’ stand-up comedy, you’ll easily recognize the plot and premise of most episodes, as they tend to adapt Jefferies’ autobiographical tales from the stage into hilarious sitcom hijinks.

Outlandish And Irreverent

Legit 2013

One of Jefferies’ most outrageous stories of all time is shown in the pilot episode of Legit, as he aides his long-time friend Billy in losing his virginity to a paid escort. While this premise would be wacky enough on its own, Billy is shown to have an advanced case of muscular dystrophy, meaning the arranged encounter could easily kill him. Despite the danger, Billy insists that he does not want to die a virgin, and begs Jim to bring him to a local brothel.

The Talent Behind Legit

Legit 2013

Other episodes of Legit center on Jim navigating the world of stand-up comedy, engaging in bizarre arguments with the general public, and offering dating and romance advice to Billy, who shockingly survives the pilot episode unscathed. As stated, Jefferies plays himself in the show, alongside a host of incredible acting talent including DJ Qualls, Dan Bakkedahl, Mindy Sterling, Sonya Eddy, Nick Daley, Jill Latiano, and Toy Story‘s John Ratzenberger. Bakkedahl serves as a major stand-out in the show, as the hen-pecked and perpetually nervous older brother to Billy and best friend of Jim.

From Canceled To Cult Following

Legit 2013

Though Legit was canceled for low viewership numbers, the series touts a cult fanbase of committed viewers, and earned critical acclaim for its off-beat humor, strong writing, and charismatic characters. Today, the show offers an 88 percent certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a near-perfect 98 percent general audience score to match. While many fans of Jim Jefferies’ work would surely kill to see additional adventures in the comic’s life adapted for the small screen, we can count ourselves lucky to have gotten 2 seasons of hilarious capers.
