Nostalgic Horror With Crazy Body Count, Stream On Tubi And Prime Video
If you grew up loving ‘80s slashers, it can be difficult to find modern spooky classics because most seem to be “elevated horror” focusing more on try-hard scripts rather than high body counts. Fortunately, those who want throwback thrills with some silly surprises don’t have to look far. All you have to do is stream Last Night At Terrace Lanes on Tubi or Prime Video.
Violence On The Lanes
The plot of Last Night At Terrace Lanes starts simply enough, with a teen wanting to take her crush out on a date at a local bowling alley on its last night before closing. She’s sad that her crush invited friends and worried that everyone will discover that her dad works at the failed bowling alley. However, she soon has something bigger to worry about: a cult that has invaded Terrace Lanes and is intent on turning everyone inside into a bloody sacrifice.
The Cast Of Up-And-Comers
The cast of Last Night At Terrace Lanes isn’t full of big names, but everyone does a very impressive job. Our chief protagonist is played by Francesca Capaldi (best known for the Disney Channel show Dog With a Blog), and her crush is played by Mia Rae Roberts (best known for the movie Leo Lets It Rain). Meanwhile, our protagonist’s father is played by Ken Arnold, someone best known to genre fans for playing Buzz Aldrin in Men in Black 3.
While the core cast of Last Night At Terrace Lanes is great, this weird horror comedy has just as much talent behind the camera. The script is written by Adam Cesare (the YA author who wrote Clown in a Cornfield, soon to be a major motion picture) and Jenna St. John (best known for writing the hilariously subversive Sexpectations series). And the movie is helmed by Jamie Nash, a veteran Hollywood horror director who has also been a writer and producer for great spooky flicks like V/H/S 2.
Murderous Mathletes?
Relative to many recent horror releases, Last Night At Terrace Lanes has largely flown under the radar. Outside of a local theatrical premiere, the movie was released directly to streaming. And it has garnered so little critical attention that it doesn’t even have a critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
That’s a shame because this film has plenty of quirky twists that make it stand out from the pack. Like, remember the dork in Mean Girls who called himself a “mathlete?” In this horror film, the cultists are all mathletes, killers apparently driven mad by staring into the mathematical abyss.
The Perfect Slasher Callback
Aside from such fun and modern twists, the best thing about Last Night At Terrace Lanes is that it is the ultimate love letter to 80s slashers. The movie has a few problems with uneven pacing, but its essential structure—let us know an eclectic ensemble cast before unleashing masked psycho killers on them—recalls the best of the Friday the 13th films. The resulting body count is truly impressive, and the movie brutally establishes that none of your favorite characters are safe.
