Hulu Horror Classic From Acclaimed Comedian Is A Nearly Perfect Watch

By TeeJay Small | Published

If you’re looking for a complex horror film to stream this weekend, you should do yourself a massive favor and pull up 2017’s Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele, which is currently streaming on Hulu. Whether you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this brilliant movie yet, or you’re just in need of a rewatch, Get Out offers some of the best thrills, chills, and kills of the last decade, with some truly moving performances at the center.

The movie is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele, who was previously known for his sketch comedy work before Get Out catapulted him into place as the godfather of modern horror.

Get Out Pushed Horror Forward

Get Out is truly unlike your run-of-the-mill horror movie experience, as the film delivers on a thought-provoking premise that satirizes the state of modern racism within the culture of the United States. Rather than having the villains be straight-up Klansmen, burning crosses on the lawn of their black neighbors, Jordan Peele expertly used the film to unveil an unnerving iteration of modern racism, which sees white people virtue signaling to one another while stripping black people and their culture for parts.

A Road Trip Gone Wrong

Like many atmospheric horror movies, Get Out is best experienced as blind as possible, so I won’t give away too much of the film’s plot here. For now, all I’ll say about the Jordan Peele-directed film is that it centers on a young black man named Chris Washington as he accompanies his white girlfriend on a weekend trip to her wealthy parent’s upstate New York home.

Something Isn’t Right

Though Chris has reservations about how his girlfriend’s older white parents may feel about their relationship, he quickly learns that the family has an interesting relationship with race, which includes employing black groundskeepers and maids and liberally tossing out phrases like “I would have voted for Obama for a third term if I could have” completely unprompted.

Chris and the viewing audience can sense something disturbing lurking just beneath the veneer of politeness throughout the runtime of Get Out, though the thrilling climax of the film is all but impossible to predict.

Jordan Peele Went From Comedy To Horror

As stated, this movie put Jordan Peele on the map as a horror director and paved the way for his other films, such as Us and Nope. Prior to the film hitting theaters in 2017, Peele was best known as one-half of the comedy duo Key & Peele, alongside fellow sketch comedy legend Keagan-Michael Key.

A Critical And Commercial Hit

Today, Get Out maintains a staggering 98 percent certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and continues captivating audiences all around the world. The visual language of the Jordan Peele movie is completely unparalleled, with a few stunning shots that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Of course, the film is bolstered by some truly moving performances, especially those from Daniel Kaluuya, Bradley Whitford, Catherine Keener, Lil Rel Howery, and a brief but memorable inclusion of Atlanta‘s LaKeith Stanfield.
