Boy Meets World Star Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Danielle Fishel, best known for her co-starring role in the hit 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World, announced on Monday that she was recently diagnosed with a form of breast cancer. Talking with fellow Pod Meets World co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle during the most recent episode, the actress revealed that doctors detected DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), a rare form of the disease. But despite her medical diagnosis, the woman who once dazzled fans as Topanga Lawrence remains positive about the prognosis and is coming forward with the news to help spread needed information about early cancer detection and treatment.
Danielle Fishel Remains Optimistic About Diagnosis
Danielle Fishel noted that doctors found the cancer at what she referred to as “stage zero” and that there are plans on having surgery as soon as possible to remove it from her body. The Boy Meets World actress gave assurances to listeners that she was “going to be fine,” and that she was already in the process of planning the follow-up treatment to the upcoming surgery.
DCIS involves rapid changes to the cells inside a breast duct. The change in the cells’ DNA leads to rapid cell growth and multiplication. In this early stage, the cancer cells lack the ability to emerge from the breast duct and invade the soft tissue in the breast. Danielle Fishel discovered she had DCIS in the way that many women have, from a routine mammogram.
Early Warnings And Big Decisions
Danielle Fishel discussed how she had received a text reminder of her annual mammogram being due, which prompted her to make an appointment. Health care providers made the DCIS discovery, which the actress said prompted her to go public with her diagnosis in the hope that she can encourage other women to schedule and undergo annual mammograms. She maintains that without this early detection that she might not have been fortunate enough to have had doctors catch the cancer in the earliest stage.
The surgery for the cancer’s removal is the next phase of Danielle Fishel’s plan, though she’s adamant that she’ll need to take more steps before she’s out of the dark. She mentioned on the podcast that she still has “big decisions” to make that stemmed from appointments with both a radiologist and an oncologist.
Keeping A Positive Outlook
Her podcast co-hosts shared their support and sympathies for Fishel and remarked about how many individuals they personally know who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Danielle Fishel’s Boy Meets World co-star Rider Strong commented that he and his wife have four friends who are personally dealing with breast cancer and echoed sentiments about how important it is to get checked routinely.
The Importance Of Early Detection
On the podcast, Will Friedle offered his support as well, telling Danielle Fishel that those who care about her are lucky that she didn’t put off getting her mammogram. He added that though she might have some “sucky” days ahead of her that she has great people in her life that will be there by her side through it all.
