Fans of an obscure 80s horror film will finally get a sequel after waiting nearly 40 years. Spookies was released to theaters in 1986 to mixed critical reception in a limited box office run. But after its premier on the USA Network in the later years of the decade, the movie generated a healthy cult following that has made it a staple for die-hard fans of the genre. The great news for fans is that the announced sequel will be bringing back the original’s screenwriter, Frank Farel.

The news was announced when Farel sat down for an interview during the Dark Arts Festival in Rhode Island earlier this month and shared the great news for the Spookies sequel.

The Barrens Hideout Podcast aired the conversation, where Farel outlined what his hopes were for the film. The 1986 film’s writer and co-producer revealed that with this incarnation, he wants to pull out all the stops and give fans a totally different experience than the original.

Studio Interference

“I don’t want to make a typical sequel,” Farel said. “I want to make something that’s an animal of its own.” In some ways, the writer says he wants to make what he calls an “anti-sequel,” instead of just doing a predictable and tired “rehashing” of the original Spookies.

But Farel gave another surprising reason for wanting to create a sequel to Spookies. Fans might not be aware, but the powers that held the purse strings for the first film wrestled it away from Farel and the movie’s co-directors Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran while it was in post-production stages.

Not satisfied with what was handed to them, the executive producers then hired filmmaker Eugenie Joseph to craft new scenes, which were then edited into the existing film.

Party In The Wrong Spot

This resulted in an oddly put together production, with scenes that leave many viewers wondering about the film’s continuity and the mismatched scenes that don’t seem to really fit together with the overall storyline. But for fans that came to love Spookies, it’s all part of the film’s charm.

For those who haven’t witnessed the horror of the original film, Spookies follows a group of young adults who decide (for some reason) to party in an old, rural mansion that they believe is abandoned.

But as the movie unfolds, it’s revealed that the decrepit structure is the home of an ancient warlock named Kreon, who needs human victims to keep his sleeping bride alive.

An Army Of Monsters

The warlock has created a small army of monsters that stalk the mansion and its grounds. One by one, the partiers fall victim to reptile-like demons, giant spiders, a witch, a vampire, mud men, and a horde of zombies. As the uninvited guests all die, their essence is preserved so that Kreon is able to keep his wife alive.

The brief theatrical run of Spookies included a premiere in France in 1986 and U.S. theaters in early 1988. The release to VHS and runs on USA’s Saturday Nightmares and Commander USA’s Groovie Movies made it the cult film it is today.
