John Wick Sequel Series Is Happening, Here’s All We Know
The latest John Wick chapter is a sequel series titled John Wick: The High Table, forthcoming from Lionsgate Television and will follow the events in the fourth movie, John Wick, Chapter 4. The new TV series will include Keanu Reeves as a producer, as well as director Chad Stahelski. Bringing in some new characters to build on the existing favorites to give the franchise a new direction, the series aims to keep the feel of the John Wick world while engaging with a new audience.
A Sequel Series To Determine The Fate Of John Wick
The John Wick sequel series will be the second John Wick TV endeavor after the prequel miniseries launched on Peacock in 2023. The three movies, sandwiched between the previous series and the one currently in the works, follow the exploits of a team of elite assassins through their adventures in an action-packed battle royale to determine the fate of John Wick.
Picking up the story in the immediate aftermath of John Wick 4, the sequel series carries on these adventures after Wick’s fateful showdown with his former employers.
Keanu Reeves Is On Board As A Producer
To continue the franchise, director Chad Stahelski will retain his creative control over the new John Wick sequel series adhering to a deal he struck with Lionsgate, and will also direct at least the pilot episode. The team of producers includes Stahelski, Keanu Reeves, Erica Lee, and Iwanek, as well as writer Robert Levine.
The lineup, all with strong attachments to the previous movies and series, promises to continue the series vengeance-fueled romp through the not-so-secret world of spies.
John Wick Does Better With Each Film
While Lionsgate is still searching for a buyer for the John Wick sequel series, the billion-dollar success of the franchise should help to secure an outlet. The most recent John Wick film, John Wick Chapter 4, brought in $187.1 million at the box office and went on to take sixth place on Netflix’s most-watched list on its streaming release in June. In addition to the success of the most recent movie, the previous streaming miniseries, The Continental, reached the top of Peacock’s most streamed list on its release.
A Full Sequel Is On The Way But That’s Not All
Lionsgate is developing another feature-length John Wick sequel that, on its surface, seems to coincide with the timeline of the John Wick sequel series, spurring fans’ questions as to how the two will reconcile their parallel trajectories.
While Lionsgate has not commented on the potential for overlap, the film’s producers have commented that there’s no official storyline or release date yet for John Wick 5. With studio execs only mentioning the name of the fifth John Wick movie, it might be a while before the plot and any possible overlap with the new sequel series are revealed.
A Pair Of Spin-Offs
In addition to the John Wick sequel series and John Wick 5, Lionsgate is developing two more John Wick spinoffs: one that centers on Donnie Yen’s Caine and another, Ballerina, about a young female assassin driven by revenge who seeks out and kills the people who murdered her family.
Ballerina will fit in the timeline between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, and the Caine spinoff is scheduled to be shot in Hong Kong, chronologically following the latest movie. While these upcoming films do intersect the world of John Wick, they are not set up to chronologically interfere with either the existing movies or the series currently in the pipeline.
