Raunchy Netflix Comedy Series With Controversial Comedian Hated By Critics And Loved By Fans
Stand-up comedy has become an absolute minefield of controversy in recent years, with numerous comedians taking to the stage to lambast the existence of so-called “cancel culture” in place of telling actual jokes. One comedian, who has arguably the most reason to whine about the state of modern comedy, has built his entire career off of actually being funny instead, as a fun and novel twist. The comedian in question, Shane Gillis, recently launched and starred in a hilarious comedic series called Tires on Netflix, which has divided audiences and critics in a major way.
The Creation Of Shane Gillis
Tires was created and developed for Netflix by Shane Gillis in collaboration with his writing partners Steve Gerben and John McKeever. McKeever serves as a director on all 6 episodes of the show, while Gillis and Gerben lead the cast as a pair of slacker employees running a family-owned auto body chain.
Over the course of the first season, several notable faces in the world of stand-up comedy make appearances, including the likes of Andrew Schulz, Stavros Halkias, Chris O’Connor, and Kilah Fox.
From YouTube To Netflix
Gillis and company originally attempted to launch Tires as a YouTube exclusive series before eventually selling to Netflix. This means that the entire first season was fully self-funded and independently shot before it was picked up by the streamer, including the pilot, which was originally shared on YouTube back in 2019. Since landing on Netflix, however, the show has made waves with audiences and has already been picked up for a second season.
Critics And The General Audience Can’t Agree
Despite the highly favorable audience reaction to Tires, critics lambasted the Netflix show, specifically citing it as a low-stakes outing with few narrative conflicts and a barely serviceable plot. This has resulted in a staggering disparity between the critic and audience scores on review aggregate sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, where the show has a 43 percent critic score against an 87 percent audience score. This comes as no surprise to fans of Shane Gillis’ work, as the comedian is no stranger to critical controversy.
Triumphant Return To SNL
Gillis was originally meant to join the cast of Saturday Night Live years ago, long before Tires was streaming on Netflix. Unfortunately, just as it seemed like the rising star would be getting his big break, Gillis was fired from SNL before the season even began due to a series of uncovered jokes from his past that were deemed problematic to the sensitivities of modern audiences.
While I won’t personally defend the content of the offensive jokes, it does seem a bit odd for the long-running variety program to take issue with such mild humor, as there are arguably more offensive jokes being churned out of NBC sitcoms every night of the week.

Regardless, many fans anticipated that the comedian would flounder and disappear after losing out on his SNL deal, though it ultimately served as a minor roadblock. In the years since, Shane Gillis has made a name for himself as an unabashedly funny stand-up comic who doesn’t rely on overly-polarized topics to drive engagement and simply loves to make people across the entire social and political spectrum laugh.
