Doctor Who Spinoff Confirmed At Disney
Announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, an exciting new Doctor Who spinoff has been officially ordered by Disney+ and the BBC. Titled The War Between The Land And The Sea, this thrilling series is co-written by Russell T Davies, the current Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer. The show promises to delve deeply into the enigmatic and powerful Sea Devil race, bringing a fresh and captivating narrative to the Doctor Who universe.
The Long-Rumored UNIT Spin-Off
The five-part series will feature a mix of returning and new cast members. Jemma Redgrave will reprise her role as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, while Alexander Devrient will return as Colonel Ibrahim. Additionally, the series will include familiar faces such as Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Although these actors have appeared in previous episodes, Davies has confirmed that they will be portraying entirely new characters in this Doctor Who spinoff series.
The Sea Devils Have Been Around For Awhile
The Sea Devils, first introduced in Doctor Who in 1972, are an aquatic race that once ruled the Earth long before humanity’s time. In The War Between The Land And The Sea, the Sea Devils begin to emerge from the depths of the ocean, leading to a major crisis. The Unified Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) is called upon to counter the Sea Devils’ invasion and prevent their takeover. Russell T Davies has described the series as “a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Who universe to its foundations,” emphasizing the dramatic and epic nature of the storyline.
Disney Is Pushing Doctor Who
The BBC and Disney+ are positioning this spinoff as a serious contender to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With the MCU’s extensive array of interconnected series and films, Disney+ and the BBC are hopeful that the high-stakes plot and strong fan appeal of this new Doctor Who spin-off series will help them compete effectively. The spinoff’s dramatic narrative and rich lore are designed to captivate both existing fans and new viewers alike.
Not The First Spin-Off
This series will mark the fourth Doctor Who spinoff officially licensed by the BBC. Previous spinoffs include K9 and Company (1981), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007), Class (2016), and the beloved Torchwood (2006). While K9 and Company was condensed into a Christmas special, the other series were generally well-received by audiences. Fans are hopeful that The War Between The Land And The Sea will achieve similar or even greater success.
