Marvel Admits Deadpool & Wolverine Is A Strategy To Get Robert Downey Jr. Back
While Deadpool officially joining the MCU was already a huge selling point for his newest movie, there is no doubt that Hugh Jackman’s return has played a massive amount of interest in the sequel. It has already opened up conversations about whether other potential stars could return to the MCU. And Kevin Feige recently revealed that after Jackman’s return for Deadpool & Wolverine, even the likes of Robert Downey Jr. returning as Iron Man is not off the table.
Multiverse Shenanigans
Obviously, the last we saw Iron Man in the MCU, he had a very noble sacrifice at the end of the latest Avengers film. However, Wolverine was also killed off in Logan, which was supposed to be Jackman’s farewell to the character. But with the latest era of Marvel embracing multiverses, nobody truly stays dead. We certainly see this in Deadpool & Wolverine, which means an alternative version of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man could show up in the future.
Kevin Feige is clearly interested in the idea, too, addressing the potential for Robert Downey Jr. to return in a recent interview about Deadpool & Wolverine. “That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine.”
Other Returns
And it is not just Robert Downey Jr. who is being discussed for a return following the hype for Deadpool & Wolverine. Chris Evans has also been mentioned for possibly returning as Captain America. While the MCU has been working to pass the torch of Iron Man and Captain America onto their next generation of heroes, there is no denying Evans and Downey reprising their roles would have a massive fan response.
Proof It Can Be Done
Kevin Feige has been very eager to try and give fans what they want, and he seemed to strongly hint that following fan response for Deadpool & Wolverine, nothing is off the table, not even Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans showing up again. “So, what’s to come?” he said. “We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [‘Deadpool & Wolverine’] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken.”
Feige did stress that if Iron Man or Captain America did come back, it would not be the same versions as before. He does not want to tamper with the emotional sendoffs both characters got in Avengers: Endgame. Like with Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine, if Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans did come back, it would be alternate timeline versions of them.
The Catch
However, the true test is if Downey and Evans wanted to come back. Both had commented in the past that working for Marvel basically takes over an actor’s career and leaves them a lot less time for other projects.
Both actors have been enjoying doing non-superhero movies again lately. But maybe seeing the fan excitement for Deadpool & Wolverine could have intrigued Robert Downey Jr. to revisit Tony Stark. There is, after all, another Avengers movie coming up on the horizon.
A New Era For Marvel
It certainly is not unprecedented. Following Logan, Hugh Jackman said he was done with Wolverine unless he could maybe play him again in an Avengers film. Then, Marvel Studios regaining the rights to the X-Men opened up new possibilities. After Deadpool & Wolverine, perhaps Robert Downey Jr. would like to share the screen with some new faces from the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, or even Blade.
