Kevin Costner Horizon Flop Could Cost His Actual House
Kevin Costner could lose more than just his reputation after his latest Hollywood flop. Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is the first film in a proposed four-part $100 million saga written, directed, and starring the longtime actor. However, after pulling in a meager $11 million at the box office during its opening weekend, Costner’s finances may be in serious jeopardy.
Kevin Costner Goes Out Of Pocket
According to Radar Online, the veteran actor has poured $38 million out of his pocket to help finance the project. Even worse, Kevin Costner mortgaged his 10-acre waterfront ranch in Santa Barbara to “fund this dream.
The decision to mortgage his own home may cost him the most. However, a source close to the situation claims that Kevin Costner has nobody to blame but himself.
Completely Wiped Out?
Despite Costner deeming himself as “not a very good businessman,” the actor reportedly refused financial advice from several experts. A curious decision if he saw himself that way in reality.
It’s looking like a grim prediction for Kevin Costner and Horizon. “Kevin could be wiped out by this disaster. Everyone warned him not to invest his own money, but he ignored the advice and ended up sinking $38 million of his own cash into it,” the insider said. “Now he can kiss all that money goodbye!”
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 Pushed Back?
Following the film’s abysmal box office performance, New Line Cinema has already pushed back the premiere date of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2.
Initially slated to hit theaters in August, the sequel will now see a November release date. Meanwhile, the Western epic’s third entry has already begun production, with filming taking place in Utah.
A Kevin Costner Passion Project
Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga was definitely a passion project. However, the film had been a struggle for Costner to produce for some time. After originally developing the story in 1988, the project was met with countless rejections until it was greenlit in 2022.
Set around Civil War America, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga tells the story of a blossoming settlement over the course of 15 years. The acclaimed actor aimed to present an authentic portrayal of life in the ever-expanding American West.
Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Jena Malone join Costner in the ensemble cast for the saga’s first chapter.
Critics Were Disappointed
Although the film was met with an 11-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival in May, critics have soured on the Western. With a disappointing score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, Kevin Costner’s Horizon is a three-hour-long epic but failed to live up to the star’s initial expectations.
The box office flop has become yet another stumble for the once-revered actor.
Rough Time For Kevin Costner
Since garnering praise for his performance in Yellowstone, Kevin Costner has seen a sharp reversal of fortune in recent years. In February 2024, Costner finalized his divorce from Christine Baumgartner after nearly 20 years of marriage. As part of the couple’s agreement, Costner pays over $63,000 each month in child support for the couple’s three children.
Just four months after his divorce, the actor confirmed that he would not be returning for Season 5B of Yellowstone. By the end of his tenure on the show, Kevin Costner was making over $1 million per episode.
With the added box office struggles of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga, it remains to be seen how the actor will respond.
