Suits Spinoff Coming This Fall With Major DC Star
Thanks to Suits recently having a new wave of fans and watch time on Netflix, NBC has decided to go ahead with a new Suits spinoff. The show will be called Suits: LA and feature DC star Stephen Amell, playing a lawyer from New York now running his own law firm in Los Angeles.
The Original Series and Suits: L.A.
Suits: LA, featuring Stephen Amell (Arrow) as the lead actor was recently announced by NBC. The producers for the new show are UCP and Hypnotic. Additionally, Aaron Korsh, the creator of Suits, will return as the writer and executive producer for the new series.
The series featuring Stephen Amell was green-lit by NBC following a huge increase in viewers of the original show. When Suits hit Netflix, the series actually managed to set a new record for the most viewed acquired streaming title on Netflix. This resurgence came almost four years after the series ended, and NBC felt it was a good time for Suits: LA.
The Netflix Effect
Suits managed to become so popular that it beat out the previous record, made in 2020 by The Office. The Office managed to rack up 57.1 billion minutes of viewership in the United States in just one year. While that was a pretty impressive number, Suits beat it out by 0.6 billion, for a total of 57.7 billion watch minutes in the United States in 2023.
Both shows provide some pretty telling information about Netflix’s viewership. The Office kept up its impressive number of watch hours until it was removed and placed on NBCU’s Peacock platform. In a reversed story, Suits didn’t really have many viewers when it was on Peacock, but once it hit Netflix, it started to make waves.
Other Suits Titles
This wasn’t the first Suits spinoff either. Before Suits: LA, another series called Pearson, focused on Gina Torres‘ (Firefly) character, Jessica Pearson. Unfortunately, that series only made it 10 episodes before it was canceled. NBC hopes a spinoff featuring entirely new characters and the popular Stephen Amell will do better.
The upcoming spinoff will focus on a new group, led by Stephen Amell’s character Ted Black. In Suits: L.A. Ted is a former prosecutor in New York, who has now built a firm in L.A. His firm specializes in entertainment and criminal law.
Stephen Amell And Company
Additional Suits: L.A. cast includes John Amos (Coming to America), Bryan Greenberg (Prime), Victoria Justice (Victorious), and Josh McDermitt (The Walking Dead) alongside Stephen Amell. As of yet, there has been no information on whether any of the cast from Suits will appear in the show.
During an interview with People, Stephen Amell said he was very excited about his role in Suits: LA “I’m very excited. It’s something very new and different for me — talky-talky, not punchy-punchy.”
Plenty More Where That Came From
This isn’t the only series NBC has picked up, as Grosse Pointe Garden Society is another one the company announced recently. This is another drama, but instead of Stephen Amell-style lawyers like in Suits: LA, this series will focus on suburban garden club members as they get swept up in murder and standard suburban life. Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn 99), AnnaSophia Robb (Race to Witch Mountain), Ben Rappaport (For the People), Matthew Davis (Legally Blonde), and Alexander Hodge (Joy Ride) are some of the cast for Grosse Pointe Garden Society.
