the resort

The Resort is a dark comedy mystery that you have to see to believe. At first, you might not understand what the big deal is, but once you watch the first episode, you’ll find yourself increasingly drawn in until you’re binging all eight episodes just to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Noah And Emma

the resort

The Resort opens up with a couple, Noah (William Jackson Harper) and Emma (Cristin Miloti) beginning their vacation in the Mayan Riviera to celebrate their 10th anniversary.

From the beginning, you can see that Noah is happily content with his relationship with his wife, smiling and enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean, the beach, and the people as they wander their surroundings.

It’s also quite clear that Emma is not as happy as Noah. She seems discontent, ill-at-ease, and generally unhappy, but we don’t know why.

The Accident

the resort

Shortly after they arrive, Noah and Emma take an ATV trip through the jungle. Emma thinks that going on adventures and having this time together will bring the couple closer.

Instead, Emma’s ATV hits a stone and she veers off the path, is thrown from her vehicle, and lands in the mud, where she is knocked out for a minute. When she comes to, she finds an old cell phone and sneaks it into the pocket of her jeans, not telling Noah about it when he finds her.

They head back to the resort as the scene cuts to a flashback of two young adults, Sam and Violet, having a chance encounter at the same resort 15 years earlier. Sam has a skateboard accident and Violent bandages him up.

The Disappearance

When Noah learns that Emma has hidden the cell phone from him, they have an argument. Emma reveals she wanted something exciting for herself, and Noah, though he doesn’t understand the urge to investigate, asks Emma if he can join her.

It’s obvious he’s eager to find a connection for them and reignite their old passions. Their joint efforts unlock the cell phone and find text message exchanges between Sam and Violet.

Noah and Emma then learn that the youths have been missing from the resort for 15 years, at the same time that a huge storm came through the area and destroyed a once famous hotel nearby: Oceania Vista.

Baltasar

In flashbacks, things start to get interesting for Sam and Violet when Violet shows Sam a book her mother left her, El Desilusion del Tiempo,” in which she left an inscription directing her daughter to reunite with her at “Pasaje,” a place Violet finds in the book that is supposed to be enchanted and “outside of time.”

Violet and Sam go to a party at the resort and meet two employees, Luna and Baltasar (played by the marvelous Luis Gerardo Mendez). Baltasar is apparently the disowned son of the Frias crime family. In the present day, Violet and Noah get a lead to hunt down Baltasar for answers.

GFR SCORE

From here, The Resort takes us back and forth in time between Noah and Emma and Sam and Violet, with Baltasar in both timelines and coming to the aid of both couples in various ways. We also meet Alex Vasilakis (played by creator Ben Sinclair), an eccentric millionaire who owns Oceania Vista in the earlier timeline, before the hotel is destroyed.

He’s a good man, a great employer, and a visionary of sorts, but you find yourself constantly wondering if he’s dangerous and delusional or a mystic of some sort. The journey to uncover what actually happened 15 years ago as both timelines move forward becomes gripping, and the ending is entirely unpredictable.

The Resort is one of those shows you could easily binge on a weekend, or in a single day if you’re determined enough, and I can’t blame anyone who does. I know I did. Stream it on Peacock when your calendar is clear.
