The Iconic 2000s Horror Thriller Netflix Needs To Get

By Nina Phillips | Published

When it comes to horror movies, Ghost Ship might not be the most memorable film ever produced, but it was plenty entertaining and fun to watch. It relied on a solid story rather than jump scares or weak conclusions to draw in and creep out its viewers. Despite the poor ratings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, I think it’s one that fans need to try out for themselves, and there’s not a much better way than it being picked up by some streaming service like Netflix.

Ghost Ship Has A Simple Set-Up

Ghost Ship is a story about a passenger ship being rediscovered after it first went missing in 1962. A salvage crew stumbles across the still-floating ship, and the team decides it’s worth salvaging to try and claim a high fortune.

The team decides to explore the ship first and see what else they can discover, such as treasures or what happened to the crew and passengers. There, they find out that the ship might not be as empty as they thought.

A Better Cast Than You’d Expect

There are some notable actors in this film, including Julianna Margulies (ER), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), Ron Eldard (Black Hawk Down), Desmond Harrington (Dexter), Karl Urban (Star Trek), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), and Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy).

The writers and director, however, were and still are much more unknown. Steve Beck, the director of Ghost Ship, only directed one other movie, Thir13en Ghosts. Otherwise, he was more known for directing commercials for companies like Chevrolet, McDonald’s, and Gatorade.

Mark Hanlon and John Pogue were writers for Ghost Ship. While John Pogue has worked on some other films, including The Skulls, U.S. Marshals, and The Quiet Ones, Mark Hanlon doesn’t have the same experience under his belt. He’s only done one other film, called Buddy Boy.

Somehow Turned A Small Profit

Ghost Ship was not a movie many viewers enjoyed. Audience members on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t have much positive to say about the movie, giving it an average score of 37 percent. Critics hated the film even more and awarded Ghost Ship only 15 percent.

Despite critics and audience members alike giving Ghost Ship fairly negative reviews, the film was considered a commercial success. It managed to gross over $68 million and only had a budget of $20 million.

The Opening Scene Is Remembered To This Day

While Ghost Ship is difficult to find, it deserves to be noticed. As far as a 20-year-old movie goes, it’s held up against the test of time rather well. Despite the bad reviews, the movie wasn’t actually all that bad.

The problem with the film was a misunderstanding. The first scene of Ghost Ship is gritty and gory, and many thought it set the tone for the whole film. Unfortunately, that scene was quite the exception, with most of the story being horror-related but not necessarily scary or gory.

Ghost Ship Should Be A Cult Classic

REVIEW SCORE

However, Ghost Ship still has plenty of interesting scenes, and the overarching story is entertaining as well as easy to digest.

While I will admit the story of Ghost Ship isn’t anything unique or unusual, the story is good enough to keep you watching until the end. It’s one that deserves to be put on Netflix, or some other streaming platform, and given a chance for new audience members to find it.

As it stands today, it’s only available through limited video on demand via Amazon, Google Play, Apple, and YouTube.
