Blade Runner 2099 Gets Another Red-Hot Actress To Join Series

By Britta DeVore | Updated

From the halls of East Highland High School to the sci-fi world of Blade Runner 2099, Euphoria star, Hunter Schafer, is the latest big-name star to add their name to the show’s ever-growing call sheet. Schafer joins the previously announced Academy Award-winning actress, Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) who will appear in the Prime Video project’s leading role. With Season 3 of Euphoria facing huge setbacks over the last few years, it appears that some of its actors like Schafer and Eric Dane are ready to push through with other TV productions.

Hunter Schafer In Bladerunner 2099

Right now, plot details surrounding Blade Runner 2099 are being kept hush-hush which means that although she’s announced to be joining the cast, we don’t know who Hunter Schafer will be playing. The facts so far set the new series as a follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 movie, Blade Runner 2049, and marks itself as the third overall title in the growing franchise started by Ridley Scott back in 1982’s Blade Runner.

Like so many great sci-fi productions over the years, Blade Runner is adapted from a novel, that of Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Harrison Ford In The Original Blade Runner

The original Blade Runner film starred Harrison Ford during the early rise of his career with the previous years seeing the actor in the first two Star Wars films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Apocalypse Now. The movie centered on Ford’s character, Deckard, a man tasked with finding and killing four escaped Replicants who have traveled back to Earth. Although the plot of the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 series can be up for debate, we’re sure there will be plenty of Replicants in its storyline.

More than three decades after the original film, Dune helmer Denis Villeneuve stepped up to the plate with leading man Ryan Gosling to tell the follow-up story in Blade Runner 2049. Like Ford’s Deckard, Gosling’s character was also a member of law enforcement, but this time around, he stumbled upon a secret within the Los Angeles Police Department that could threaten everything.

Seeking help, the officer sought out the only man for the job – Deckard. Because the sequel tied itself to the first movie by way of Ford’s involvement, we can’t help but wonder if Blade Runner 2099 will bring either Ford or Gosling back.

Hunter Schafer’s Past Work

As for Hunter Schafer, Blade Runner 2099 marks the latest project to cross the desk of the 25-year-old actress. Late last year, she appeared in The Hunger Games prequel flick, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and will welcome two other features – Tilman Singer’s horror flick Cuckoo and Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark comedy Kinds of Kindness – later this year. Beyond that, she’s set to appear in David Lowery’s drama, Mother Mary.

Euphoria Season 3 Update

When it comes to Euphoria, there’s a good chance that audiences will see Schafer in Prime Videos’ Blade Runner 2099 before HBO is ever able to start and finish production on the dark drama’s third season. It’s been well over two years since the second season graced our screens and production was delayed time and time again, giving the actors time to delve into new projects. However, they may now be ruing that decision as the leading cast (as well as members of the ensemble) are filling their schedules elsewhere.
