If you love a good psychological horror, then Smile may be just the horror movie you’re looking for. While the film flew a little bit under the radar when it was released, many horror fans have checked it out since then. If you haven’t seen it for yourself yet and you want something scary for the weekend, it’s now streaming on Paramount+.

Cast And Crew

Smile the horror movie is written and directed by Parker Finn, who made his feature directorial debut with the film and based it on his own 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. Sosie Bacon stars as a therapist who witnesses her patient commit suicide, and the trauma of the event leads her to have increasingly disturbing and unexplainable experiences that force her to confront her past to escape her nightmares.

The rest of the cast is rounded out by Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, Rob Morgan, and Caitlin Stasey, who plays the same role she played in Laura Hasn’t Slept.

Smile 2

Smile was well-received by horror movie audiences and critics alike and even managed to gross a very respectable $217.4 million worldwide against a budget of $17 million. This was enough for the film to get a sequel greenlit, which will see Kyle Gallner reprise his role from the first film.

Parker Finn is returning to direct and write the sequel, and Naomi Scott is set to star alongside Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula, Raul Castillo, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley.

A Different Kind Of Movie

As Finn revealed in previous statements, the Smile horror movie sequel will delve into some of the unresolved plotlines from the first film, and that we may learn more about the entity that appears in the first film.

He also said that the sequel would be “notably different” from the first film, so it’ll be interesting to see how he expands the world he set up. Of course, the sequel will undoubtedly be a better watch if you’ve seen the first outing.

October Release

The Smile horror movie sequel is set for a spooky season on October 18 release date, so there’s plenty of time to catch the first one. Of course, like all great psychological horrors, it’s a movie that will have you flashing back to the most unnerving scenes for days afterward. The slow-burn style of the movie and the unsettling visuals make it a great horror experience for those who enjoy psychological horror over jump scares.

With Smile and the upcoming Smile 2, Parker Finn is quietly becoming one of the most exciting horror creators to watch in Hollywood, especially now that he recently signed on to a remake of Andrzej Zulawski’s 1981 film Possession.

That film is being produced by Robert Pattinson (and sources say he may star in it as well), with Finn attached as writer, director, and producer via his Bad Feeling banner. There’s no word on when Possession will be released.

In the meantime, it’s well worth checking out the only feature-length that Finn has out at the moment. You can stream the Smile horror movie now over on Paramount+. Make sure to check out the sequel later this year, and stay tuned for more news on his Possession remake.
