American Gladiators Reboot Happening At Amazon, All We Know
American Gladiators is coming back with a brand new reboot. According to Deadline, Amazon is bringing the competition series to Prime Video. MGM Alternative and Amazon MGM Studios are producing the series in association with Flor-Jon Films, which is the company of American Gladiators co-creator Johnny C. Ferraro.
A Reality TV Trailblazer
Ferraro is also on board to executive produce the American Gladiators reboot.
While competition reality shows have only become more popular over the past few decades, American Gladiators blazed a trail as one of the first reality competition shows on TV. The original series first hit screens in 1989 and ran for seven seasons.
The Original
The series features amateur athletes competing against each other and gladiators brought on by the show in a series of challenges.
The series was co-created by Johnny C. Ferraro and Dan Carr. The American Gladiators reboot will bring back some of these classic challenges, such as Gauntlet, Hang Tough, and The Eliminator.
Gladiators
American Gladiators getting a reboot at Amazon isn’t completely out of nowhere, as the BBC recently found success bringing the show back in the form of Gladiators. Gladiators first aired in 1992, and the new version is the second revival of the series.
The 2024 BBC season of the series became the most successful launch for the broadcaster in seven years and brought in over 6 million viewers for its premiere episode alone.
Previous Reboot
The massive success of the BBC revival led to a second season renewal, and now it looks like Amazon is ready to recreate that success with the American Gladiators reboot.
This isn’t the first time the series has been rebooted in America though, as there was a 2008 attempt that featured Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali as co-hosts. The first reboot aired during the WGA writer’s strike and lasted for two seasons.
Over 15 years is a long time to bring a series back to life, but this isn’t the first time that American Gladiators was in reboot contention.
The first attempt at bringing it back was in 2014 when American Ninja Warrior producer A. Smith & Co failed to get the show going. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg tried their hands at making a version of the show in 2018, but that attempt also ended up being a dead end.
The Future
In 2021, MGM tried to bring back the show with the WWE to no avail. So, it seems like Amazon will finally get the long-awaited American Gladiators reboot off the ground.
The studio is currently casting for the upcoming season, so maybe we’ll learn about some of the gladiators in the coming months.
Along with the BBC revival of Gladiators, the American Gladiators reboot also likely gained some traction from the recent documentaries about the show.
There was a 30 For 30 episode about the series, and Netflix streamed its own documentary titled Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators. Hopefully, there aren’t any hitches to making this new reboot happen, but we’ll keep you updated on any new developments in this story.
