The Netflix Horror Series That Deserves A Season 2
The limited series is a surprisingly small genre for television. It seems like most TV shows start with no clear end goal in sight and don’t even know how many seasons they will need before finishing. So it is usually great when a limited series comes along because it means the audience is guaranteed a complete story…except in the case of Brand New Cherry Flavor, which deliberately left off half its story and doesn’t have a second season.
Brand New Cherry Flavor On Netflix
For those not in the know, Brand New Cherry Flavor was a limited series horror show that premiered on Netflix in 2021. The show is about an aspiring film director named Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) who winds up having her work stolen. This sets her down a path for revenge that leads to dangerous deals with a witch, encounters with zombies, and giving birth to many cats. It was a genuinely unique, creepy, and captivating show.
Untapped Source Material
The only problem is Brand New Cherry Flavor only runs for eight episodes. That would be fine if the show wrapped everything up, but it is based on a book of the same name, and the show essentially leaves off the second half of the book. By the conclusion of the show, there are still loose ends with the main characters and the central conflict does not really have a decisive end.
Everything seemed to point towards there being a second season, but this is evidently where the showrunners wanted to conclude things.
Limited Series Just A Little Too Limited
It is a baffling decision, as aside from the additional book material available, the show did get generally positive reviews from critics. Reviewers compared the show’s plot and style to a David Lynch film for being a bizarre mix of disturbing and fascinating. But Brand New Cherry Flavor is not just about the shock value, and actually has a heart focusing on Lisa’s struggles to get ahead in her career while dealing with the societal challenges of being a woman in Hollywood.
It is unclear who exactly made the call for Brand New Cherry Flavor to be a one-and-done show. Netflix has developed an infamous reputation for being a bit trigger happy on cancelling popular shows. Perhaps there was a deal in place that they would only produce the show if it was a one off.
Where’s Season 2?
It is especially strange since even limited series that ended definitively, like The Queen’s Gambit, had people pushing for a continuation. Meanwhile, Shogun was also supposed to be a limited series, but in that case, its popularity actually did lead to it being renewed for two more seasons. Shogun already covered all of its book material as well, so now the showrunners have no other option than to create totally original plot elements.
So it is not like Brand New Cherry Flavor would have been unprecedented if Netflix had given it a second season.
Will Leave You Wanting More
Regardless, it has been three years now with no further news on Brand New Cherry Flavor, so it seems safe to say its inconclusive ending is where things will remain. The show is still a great watch if you are looking for something quirky and dark to change things up. Just go in knowing that right as things are gearing up for a final conflict, there is instead an abrupt end.
