Our Favorite Star Trek: Discovery Series Finale Easter Eggs
Now that Star Trek: Discovery has aired its series finale, we can confidently say that the show has (more or less) managed to stick the landing. We got a solid wrap-up of this season’s ambitious Progenitor storyline and an emotional sendoff for our favorite characters, and we also got plenty of great Easter eggs. While this won’t be a comprehensive round-up, we wanted to walk Star Trek fans through our favorite Discovery Easter eggs from this show-stopped finale.
Kovich/Daniels
The biggest Easter eggs revolve around Dr. Kovich, the mysterious Federation operative played by famous director David Cronenberg. In their final onscreen conversation, Burnham deduces that “Kovich” is a code name, and the older character introduces himself as “Agent Daniels, Agent Daniels, USS Enterprise… and other places.”
This is something of a multipart Easter egg: not only is Daniels a fan-favorite character from Star Trek: Enterprise, but he once posed as a crewman on Archer’s 22nd-century Enterprise and transported that captain to the 26th-century Enterprise-J, a vessel he seemed very familiar with.
A Bad Drink
While this Star Trek: Discovery scene wasn’t exactly subtle, the conversation with Kovich/Daniels introduced the majority of the best Easter eggs in this episode. For example, we see a bottle of Chateau Picard, the infamously bad drink crafted by Patrick Stewart’s titular character in Picard.
We can’t help but wonder if Kovich actually likes the taste–if so, he might be the only person in galactic history other than Jean-Luc Picard to enjoy its flavor.
Baseballs And Visors
We also see Captain Sisko’s baseball in Kovich’s collection. It’s another blink-and-you-miss-it moment in this Star Trek: Discovery episode, but this is one of those Easter eggs that left us desperately wanting more info.
For example, Kovich probably knows whether Sisko’s corporeal form ever emerged from the Celestial Temple or if he really has spent the rest of time just chilling out with the alien Prophets in the wormhole.
Our last major reveal in this scene is that Kovich has the same kind of VISOR worn by Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. We emphasize that beloved show because the Enterprise Chief Engineer had his VISOR replaced by cybernetic eyes as of First Contact.
That means that Kovich could have gotten the old VISOR out of storage, but what is much more intriguing is the notion that Daniels might have had some misadventure with TNG-era Geordi that we never knew about.
Calypso
Speaking of which, as fun as these Star Trek: Discovery Easter eggs are, they do leave us wondering whether Kovich ever actually interacted with the characters these items belonged to. Because he is a former (or perhaps current?) temporal agent, it’s entirely possible he could have traveled back in time and worked with these characters in the same way that he previously worked with Captain Archer.
Then again, Kovich enjoys various vintage items ranging from neckties to real paper, so it’s entirely possible the time traveler just wanted to fill his office with retro knickknacks from the 24th century.
Aside from Dr. Kovich and his office, the best and most unexpected Star Trek: Discovery Easter egg was that the last scene of the finale set up the early Short Treks episode “Calypso.”
That episode previously revealed that at some point in the future, Discovery would be abandoned by her crew for a thousand years and piloted only by an AI when it rescues a man named Craft.
When Do We Get Sisko?
Originally, the sixth season of Discovery was going to more fully set up “Calypso.” After the surprise cancellation of the show, a scene was added to the finale showing Burnham ordering Zora to take the ship to a sector of space and wait for someone or something called Craft as part of a mysterious Red Directive mission.
This doesn’t answer all of our questions, of course, but it was nice to see the show acknowledge the Short Treks episode fans have been arguing about since 2018.
Again, this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list of Star Trek: Discovery Easter eggs but rather a breakdown of our faves. Honestly, as huge Deep Space Nine nerds, seeing Sisko’s iconic baseball in Kovich’s office was so cool we were happy to already be sitting down.
Now that Michael Burnham’s adventures have wrapped, we have a simple question for Paramount: when will they finally pony up enough money for us to get a solo Sisko show?
