The Greatest Crime Comedy Ever Is On Hulu, Stream A True Classic

There’s something about the combination of great writers and directors and great actors. A magic is created that is almost above and beyond the individuals themselves. Such magic happens in The Big Lebowski, streaming now on Hulu, written and directed by the Coen brothers and starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, John Turturro, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, and so many more. 

The Coen brothers have made a name for themselves with films like Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, and True Grit. These movies are known for being both serious and awkwardly humorous, leaving no character untouched by the ridiculousness that their lives serve up. There is no greater example of the Coen brother style than The Big Lebowski, which is why you should be streaming it this weekend. 

Jeff Bridges stars in this crime comedy as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski. Bridges’ Lebowski is assaulted in a case of mistaken identity. You see, Our Lebowski is a chill, laid-back slacker who loves bowling and drinking with his buddies, Walter and Donny, played by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. Turns out, there is another Jeffrey Lebowski, a millionaire whose trophy wife, Bunny, owes money to a porn kingpin named Jackie Treehorn.

The Dude demands that Lebowski compensates him for a rug that was ruined during the assault. Having no such luck, The Dude decides to steal a rug from the Millionaire’s home in retaliation. The stolen rug has sentimental value to the millionaire’s daughter, Maude, played by the spectacular Julianne Moore, which comes into play later in the film.

The Dude also learns that Bunny was kidnapped by Treehorn’s enforcers, and the millionaire Lebowski convinces him to deliver the ransom for him. The hilarity that ensues makes The Big Lebowski worth streaming over and over. 

Jeff Bridges is always great, of course, but this is one of those roles he seems to have been born to play. He delivers his lines with perfect accuracy, and his ability to be both frustrated and seemingly bored at the same time, while sitting in his bathrobe and enjoying a drink drives this point home. His delivery ensures that he will embody The Big Lebowski for the rest of eternity, and that we will keep streaming it wherever it appears next.

The Coen brothers also love to work with the same people repeatedly, which makes sense, as these actors are ideal for these kinds of silly yet serious roles. Goodman and Turturro are brilliant at playing over-the-top characters. What’s more, Peter Stormare is the ideal scary yet ridiculous thug, in this case the lead Nihilist demanding money from millionaire Lebowski — a scheme doomed to fail. If you haven’t seen The Big Lebowski yet, I won’t ruin the rest for you before you start streaming it. 

The Big Lebowski has only grown in popularity since its release, and fans the world over can be caught streaming it every chance they get. I know it plays on repeat in many of my family members’ houses. Here’s hoping you stream it on Hulu and love it like the rest of us do.
