Mobile Suit Gundam Joining Call Of Duty For The Crossover We Never Knew We Wanted

Having fallen in love with Gundam long ago, we’re always on the lookout for a great video game adaptation of this beloved mech franchise. Now, it looks like we’re getting a crossover with the last franchise we were expecting to see. The next season of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will feature a crossover with the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.

The Skins

If you’ve never played Call of Duty, or maybe it’s been a hot minute, you might be wondering what’s up with the unexpected crossover. However, crossing over with unexpected franchises has become a tradition with Modern Warfare III.

These crossovers have previously included Dune and King Kong, but that did nothing to prepare us for learning about the upcoming Gundam crossover.

Fans of Mobile Suit Gundam only have a few days to prepare for this crossover event: this is all part of  MW3/Warzone’s Season 4 which begins on May 29.

For eager fans, it’s certainly good news that this nerdy surprise is coming to us sooner rather than later. And for those who are on the fence, you’ll be able to get direct impressions of the game from your favorite streamers.

The Packs

How does the Mobile Suit Gundam crossover in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III actually work? Players can purchase three special “packs” that provide access to special Operator Skins in the game. The suits are as follows: RX-78-2, MS-06S Zaku II, and XVX-016 Gundam Aerial.

As longtime Gundam fans can tell you, this is actually a pretty good representation of fan-favorite suits, old and new. In addition to the Skins, other crossover content includes visual death effects and things like charms and decals.

At this juncture, the exact pricing details are unknown, but fans will most likely have to pay $20 per pack (this is in line with other crossover packs in the past).

A Great Idea

Speaking as gamers and anime nerds, we think that this Call of Duty crossover is a surprisingly brilliant idea. There is already plenty of crossover between FPS fans and anime fans, meaning existing gamers will dig the crossover and curious anime fans may hop into Warzone for the first time.

Plus, we’re suckers for a good Gundam game, and putting what amounts to a Gundam skin over a solid game makes this the most mecha fun you can have since Gundam Evolution was shut down late last year.

Copying Fortnite’s Crossover Success

For better or for worse, branching into anime with Gundam may mean that Call of Duty is trying to channel the success of Fortnite. Like that battle royale game, COD’s Warzone is rapidly becoming a battleground filled with colorful crossovers with other franchises.

Sure, it feels silly at times, but when you’re kicking butt in a giant mech costume, it’s the kind of silly that will leave you with a huge grin while you play.

Keep Gundam Alive

We don’t want to sound like shills, but this Gundam crossover is already working because we’re thinking about downloading this Call of Duty game for the first time. Honestly, we’re just starved for good Gundam content, and this is about to be the easiest way to feed our very specific tastes.

Plus, keeping our hands busy means we might finally stop emailing Cartoon Network about the most important thing of all: our burning need for them to put Gundam Wing on Toonami Rewind
