The Best 2000s Sci-Fi Series Is Back On Streaming
Sci-fi fans across the world can rejoice, as Battlestar Galactica has officially found a new streaming home in Amazon Prime Video. The series, which originally ran four seasons on the SyFy network from 2004 through 2009, has been unavailable to stream since it was first removed from the Peacock library last year. Though the series is technically a reboot of the 1978 original Battlestar Galactica, the 04-09 iteration has largely eclipsed the original in popular culture and is widely recognized to be one of the best sci-fi series in modern memory.
The Return Of Battlestar Galactica
Battlestar Galactica was developed for television by Star Trek producer Ronald D. Moore, who recently went on to launch the science fiction drama For All Mankind, which is streaming on Apple TV+. The series received massive critical acclaim and audience favor throughout its run, with multiple accolades, including a Peabody Award, a Television Critics Association Program of the Year Award, and nearly two dozen Emmy nominations.
Battlestar Galactica ultimately won three Emmys for visual effects and sound editing and landed on Time Magazine’s 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.
One Of The Best Sci-Fi Shows Of This Century
Moore and company developed a three-hour miniseries to serve as a pilot and proof of concept for the show. It aired on television in multiple parts before the network ordered a full series. All four seasons of Battlestar Galactica, as well as the 2009 television spinoff film Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and the original miniseries, are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The Award-Winning Cast
Battlestar Galactica‘s cast includes Jamie Bamber, Mary McDonnell, James Callis, Grace Park, Tricia Helfer, Blade Runner‘s Edward James Olmos, and The Mandalorian‘s Katee Sackhoff. The series is set in a distant future in which the last vestiges of humanity struggle against a race of alien robots called Cylons, who seek to eradicate humanity from the reaches of space. Now that Battlestar Galactica is streaming once again, fans have plenty of time to catch the beloved sci-fi series before the incoming reboot series arrives.
Reboot Series In Production
The long-awaited reboot has been rumored for some time but was recently confirmed to be in development under the umbrella of Sam Esmail’s Esmail Corp. Esmail is best known for creating and serving as showrunner on the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot. The Battlestar Galactica reboot is slated to be streamed on Peacock sometime in the next year or so with The Sinner creator Derek Simonds.
Catch Battlestar Galactica On Amazon
While it’s odd that the Battlestar Galactica series won’t be streaming on Peacock in the lead-up to the new show, perhaps this move was made to reduce confusion or steer audiences toward the new iteration. Still, fans are likely overjoyed to see the series back on the menu, as Battlestar Galactica continues bringing in new fans each passing year.
If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of watching Battlestar Galactica or feel yourself desperately in need of a rewatch, the entire series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Just be sure to have a Cylon detector nearby before viewing.
