Space Command: Redemption, a long-awaited sci-fi series funded by fans has finally been released. The project was helmed by veteran writer Marc Scott Zicree and boasts a cast featuring actors from both Star Trek and Babylon 5 franchises, including Robert Picardo and Bruce Boxleitner.

The Crowdfunding

This ambitious sci-fi saga began its journey in 2012 through a crowdfunding campaign. Fans of space adventures seen in such classics as Star Trek and similar shows rallied behind the project, and Space Command: Redemption raised $221,000. Zicree used the funding to launch Space Command Studio in Los Angeles.

This couldn’t be done with just $221,000 in initial seed money. Zicree raised $4 million by selling investment shares combined with further crowdfunding.

Zicree’s Plans

Marc Scott Zicree’s plans for the Space Command saga are huge. Over the last decade, he has managed to film and produce a 2-part pilot, now released as Space Command: Redemption. However, this is just the beginning.

Zicree envisioned Space Command as a 12-episode series exploring the hopeful future of humanity venturing out into the cosmos. According to Zicrees, filming for part 6 of the planned 12-episode series is already complete, with parts 7 and 8 already in development.

The Cast

Space Command: Redemption wouldn’t exist without a number of Star Trek and Babylon 5 stars. From Star Trek, there’s Doug Jones (Star Trek: Discovery), Robert Picardo (Voyager), Armin Shimerman (Deep Space Nine), Faran Tahir (J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek), the late Nichelle Nichols (TOS). From the Babylon 5 side of things, there’s Bill Mumy, Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5), and the late Mira Furlan.

The Story

Space Command: Redemption is an homage to Star Trek and 80s sci-fi classics. The story follows Captain Kemmer and the United Planets’ Space Command crew. They are sent on an adventure to explore our solar system, in the hope of human colonization.

The two part pilot sets the stage for the series, teasing a rescue mission led by Captain Kemmer. He saves xeno-archeologist Vonn O’Dara high above Mars, igniting a revolution bound to change galactic history.

Marc Scott Zicree

Marc Scott Zicree is a veteran writer behind the entire project. His resume includes work not only on shows like Babylon 5 and Star Trek, he has authored The Twilight Zone Companion.

He has stated that he wanted to create something different from the dark and dystopian sci-fi that reigned over the early 2000s and make Space Command: Redemption a more hopeful adventure, similar to the original Star Trek.

“Our idea was an uplifting show like the original Star Trek, which came out when I was 10, blew my mind, and inspired my lifetime fascination for this whole realm. Star Trek was truly revolutionary,” said Zicree.

Space Command: Redemption has just been released and is already available on several streaming services. It is available for free on Tubi and there are other options like renting it on Amazon and Google Play.
