Netflix Biopic Series Screams To Life, See The New Show In Action
May 1, 1994, will forever echo as one of the saddest days in Formula One history when motorsport lost its legend. Ayrton Senna’s tragic accident at the San Marino Grand Prix marked the end of an era. Now, Netflix is giving fans a chance to revisit Senna’s incredible journey from his go-karting beginnings to his meteoric rise in F1, through the streaming giant’s upcoming biopic series titled Senna.
The limited production stars Gabriel Leone as Ayrton Senna, and Netflix has recently presented the first trailer to the fans of the F1 legend. The trailer is a glimpse into the world of the racing icon, with a focus on his 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix win at the Interlagos. It shows Senna’s track maneuvers at imposing speeds but also flashbacks to his childhood dream of becoming an F1 champion.
The trailer ends with the infamous and heart-stopping winning scream in celebration of scoring his maiden win at his home Grand Prix, a feat that eluded him during the first eight seasons of his F1 career.
The six-episode Senna biopic will debut later this year on Netflix. Although the exact date is unknown, December 4 is mentioned as a probable premiere. The series is worth the wait as it promises to show Senna’s life from his arrival in the UK and British Formula to his rise to F1 stardom and will culminate with the tragic accident that happened during the San Marni Grand Prix in 1994.
Senna was announced in September 2020 and Netflix has confirmed that the production is made in full cooperation with Ayrton Senna’s family.
Ayrton Senna’s sister, Viviane Senna, has shared her excitement about the upcoming biopic saying that it is a great chance to show the world a unique and personal perspective on the legendary driver. Moreover, Senna Brands, the company which manages Ayrton’s legacy and supports the Ayrton Senna Institute, is also involved in the making of the series.
The series is directed by Vicente Amorin, who helmed Yakuza Princess and Dirty Hearts, among other titles. In addition to Senna (Leone), the series has some other F1 legends to show, including his teammate but also rival Alain Prost (Matt Mella), Niki Lauda (Johannes Heinrichs), Martin Brundle (Charlie Hamblett), and Frank Williams (Steven Mackintosh).
Senna is the most ambitious project by Netflix in Latin America. It promises an intimate look into Brazil’s national hero and racing legend. The dramatization won’t diminish his racing skills as it is bound to show how he fought against other racers and faulty racing cars as well.
Ayrton Senna da Silva was born in 1960 and was a Brazilian racing driver and made his debut in Formula One in 1984 at the Brazilian Grand Prix, racing for Toleman Motorsport.
Senna joined McLaren in 1988 and drove for the eponymous F1 team until 1993. During this time, Senna won three championship titles, in 1988, 1990, and 1991 thus becoming the youngest back-to-back champion. Moreover, he set the record for most pole positions (65), which was valid until 2006. It was with McLaren that Senna reached greats and this will be a big part of the Netflix biopic series.
Despite his premature death, Senna’s legacy continues to inspire generations of racers and motorsports lovers.
