The Netflix Zombie Horror Historical Epic Series That Needs Season 3
When people think of pandemic era shows, some of the names that probably spring to mind are Tiger King or The Queen’s Gambit. While those were both highly entertaining, there was another that probably flew under a lot of people’s radar. The South Korean 17th century zombie show, Kingdom on Netflix was one of the best shows of this era, and it is currently long overdue to receive its third season.
Is There A Kingdom Or Isn’t There?
Thus far, Kingdom has received two seasons on Netflix, as well as a one-off special episode focusing on the individual who was supposed to be the antagonist of the third season. The only problem is, the second season of the show came out in 2020 and there has been no word about when a third season might be released, or if one is coming. Nobody has said anything about the show being cancelled, so fans are very confused as to what the future of the show holds.
A Fresh Take On Zombies
Kingdom is a great original offering from Netflix, freshening up the zombie genre by placing it in a historical setting rather than the oversaturated modern day American settings we have seen so often. The zombie plague spreading across the country cannot be contained with modern weapons like guns or tanks, making the outbreak all the more tense as the protagonists fight for their lives with only swords and bows to defend themselves. The zombies also have a few traits that set them apart from others in the genre, with plot twists revealing some unexpected strengths and weaknesses for these monsters.
Political Intrigue
Kingdom also has a great deal of political intrigue, making it feel a bit like a Netflix version of Game of Thrones at times. The main tension focuses on a corrupt royal lineage that is hatching plans behind the scenes. The series sees several twists and turns as to who will become the new ruler of the central dynasty that Kingdom follows.
A Critical Darling
The series earned very positive reviews from critics, and the monsters look great too thanks to the show investing over $1.78 million into each episode. The only downside to Kingdom is that Netflix has not given us more of it yet.
While most of the major plots do wrap up at the end of season two, the closing scenes make it clear that the danger is not over yet. Nobody wants a show to end on a cliffhanger, so Kingdom really needs at least one more season to give fans the satisfactory conclusion it deserves.
Ashin Of The North
It would be especially odd for Netflix never to renew Kingdom as they already invested a lot of money into setting up the show’s next villain. Ashin is played by the award-winning Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun.
After the second season, her character was further developed through a special episode titled “Ashin of the North” that seemed to make it clear she was going to be a major character going forward. But since then, there has been nothing.
We Need An Update Netflix!
It can only be speculated why Netflix has not given us more Kingdom. Perhaps the show was getting too expensive. Or perhaps challenges from the pandemic made getting all of the actors back a challenge.
But it needs to get sorted out so we can get the continuation of the story. Kingdom is way too good to end unfinished.
Anyone looking for an intriguing drama mixed with unsettling horror will enjoy this zombie historical epic.
