The creators of Star Trek: Lower Decks have announced that the fifth season will be the show’s last. The adult animated take on Star Trek has been well-received during its first four seasons, both among Treikies and animation fans. It may be sad for fans to see the show ending, but receiving a final season to wrap things up is a good way for the show to conclude.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks follows the support crew of the USS Cerritos. By focusing on the low-ranking Starfleet members who do menial tasks on the ship, the show tells a unique story within the Trek universe. The show tends towards episodic adventures, focusing on how standard Trek plots would impact the lives of those doing less than glamorous jobs on a ship.

It gives the show a more grounded feel and allows for in-depth exploration of small universe details most Trek shows would ignore.

A Favorite Among Critics And Fans

The critical response to the show demonstrates just how respected Star Trek: Lower Decks is. The show has a near-perfect score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with seasons 2 through 4 all receiving 100 percent scores. It also has a vocal fanbase online, indicating that it’s not just critics who love it.

The Cast

Star Trek: Lower Decks has a phenomenal voice cast full of great comedic actors. The main cast includes Tawny Newsom, Jack Quaid, Noel Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Gillian Vigman, and Gabrielle Ruiz. The show also has phenomenal recurring and guest performances from Paul Scheer, Jessica McKenna, Jack McBrayer, Lauren Lapkus, Phil LaMarr, Carl Tart, Paul F. Tompkins, Ariel Winter, George Takei, John de Lancie, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Will Wheaton.

It Isn’t Just Trekkies Who Will Miss Lower Decks

One of the biggest accomplishments of Star Trek: Lower Decks is that it appeals to an audience outside of dedicated Star Trek fans. Without any knowledge of the series, it still functions as a funny, typically heartfelt, adult animated series. This is important as the franchise, particularly in the modern era, can often feel hostile towards new viewers due to the dense continuity created by previous series.

One More Season

Fortunately, Star Trek: Lower Decks will get one last season to wrap everything up and give fans a satisfying conclusion. After four seasons to establish the setting and characters, the final season can tie up character arcs, dangling plot threads, and ideas the writers had planned but didn’t get to implement in the first four seasons. It also means the show can have a planned-out finale, that works as a conclusion for the series.

Let’s Hope It Ends With A Bang

It’s sad to see one of the best takes on Star Trek end but, hopefully, the last season of Star Trek: Lower Decks can end the show on a high note. The final season premiers this fall on Paramount+.
