Live-action adaptations of anime aren’t always received well. Though One Piece managed to bring in new fans and appease its old fans, most adaptations aren’t so popular. This has led some fans to be rather worried about Parasyte: The Grey, the new Korean horror series adaptation of the manga Parasyte, and the anime Parasyte: The Maxim.

If you’re a fan of Asian horror movies and don’t mind a little science fiction, this might be the next series to add to your list.

Thankfully, based on the little information that’s known so far, and the trailer, there’s a good chance this could be an interesting story for all of those involved. It might strike the balance between fans of the original series, and those who enjoy watching horror movies. See for yourself in the trailer below.

Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of anime and manga or haven’t seen the original Parasyte. This series will still likely appeal to you. Parasyte: The Grey focuses on the frightening aspects of the original manga. In Parasyte: The Grey, the story focuses on Korea, though the parasites have taken hold of all parts of the world.

For those who know nothing of the original story, the basic premise is that the world has been taken over by parasites. They fell to earth during a meteor shower. Soon enough, they took over some unlucky people, controlling those they infected and mimicking their behavior. Their sole purpose is to multiply.

In Parasyte: The Grey, the story focuses on Korea, though the parasites have taken hold of all parts of the world. In this country, there is a group of people that are focused on eliminating the danger. However, not everything is black and white. The main character, Su-in, isn’t fully a parasite or human. She is a mutant who is a mix of both, and no one is sure whose side she’s on.

The director, Yeon Sang-ho, is the same director who did Train to Busan and Hellbound. He grew up a big fan of the original manga and anime and wanted to put his own twist on the story.

While his movies aren’t terribly popular according to reviews on IMDb, scoring between 5.5 and 7.6, some people enjoy the premise, story, and special effects of his movies. Despite this, he’s considered one of the best directors of K-dramas and horrors. Horror movie buffs often find his stories to have unique twists on classic monsters, like zombies in Train to Busan.

There have been a few other adaptations of Parasyte. First, there was the anime series Parasyte: The Maxim. This received pretty good reviews and is still popular to this day. However, the two movies Parasyte: Part 1 and Parasyte: Part 2, which were live-action Japanese movies, didn’t do nearly as well.

With Parasyte: The Grey acting as more of a parallel story than an adaptation, there is a lot more to work with. Fans of the original have a little more hope, though they’re still a little wary.

Many fans, of both the director and the manga, are holding out hope on this new horror series. Parasyte: The Grey is set to come to Netflix on April 5, and people are eagerly awaiting the first episode. The cast includes names like Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, Lee Hung-hyun, and Kwon Hae-ho.
