The Disney+ Dystopian Sci-Fi Series Is One Of The Must-Watch Animes
Attack on Titan is widely regarded as one of the greatest anime series of all time, having received universal acclaim and numerous accolades—mostly thanks to its widespread appeal and enormous global popularity. It’s outright responsible for introducing anime to newer generations of viewers, and considering that the show found its way to Disney+ through the Hulu section, it’s most likely to continue attracting the youth to animated content.
Attack On Titan’s Premise
Attack on Titan is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the small remnants of humanity live behind massive walls that protect the humans from giant humanoid Titans that just so happen to feed on humans. The series follows its protagonist, Eren Yeager, and his friends, who end up joining the elite Survey Corps—a special unit fighting the Titans. The series chronicles Eren’s journey from the moment one of the Titans eat his mother to discovering the true origin and nature of the Titans and to eventually becoming one of the Titans.
Faithful To The Source Material
This fantastic show is currently available on Disney+ through Hulu, but watching the series still requires active subscriptions to both streaming services. The great thing about Attack on Titan, and why it warrants keeping both subscriptions active, is its fidelity to the source material. The anime creators worked closely with the manga’s author, Hajime Isayama, to ensure that the adaptation remains true to the source material and that it reflects the manga’s vision closely.
The Anime Is Almost Too Close To The Manga
The plot and storyline, character development, and artistic representation closely mirror the manga. Sure, minor deviations were introduced to maintain the episodic format of the anime, but those deviations and minor omissions don’t affect the overarching storyline. Perhaps the most important detail is that the anime follows the manga so closely that it almost completely lacks filler content, which otherwise serves its purpose but has the potential to diverge from the original Attack on Titan manga’s plot.
Worldwide Acclaim
The anime adaptation was massively successful in Japan, the US, and the other parts of the globe. The Attack on Titan anime won multiple prizes during the 3rd Newtype Anime Awards, including Best Director, Best Script, Best Soundtrack, Best Theme Song, Top Female Character, and Title of the Year. It also received several awards at the 2014 Tokyo Anime Award, and it’s the first anime to win an Astra TV Award for Best Streaming Anime Series or TV Movie.
A Live-Action Adaptation On The Way
Perhaps even more impressive than the awards won by Attack on Titan is its critical reception and audience rating. The anime currently has a 95 percent critical rating and a 94 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, the anime has concluded, but its success ensured several multimedia spin-offs, with Warner Bros. and Attack on Titan IP rights holder Kodansha finalizing the deal to produce a live-action adaptation with Andy Muschietti signing on to direct the movie.
A Series That Evolved Into Greatness
What might’ve started as a typical shonen anime evolved into a fantastic narrative that tackled the themes of war, classism, racism, and other heavy topics, layered with numerous plot twists, plenty of action, and several Game of Throne-esque deaths. This has cemented Attack on Titan as one of the greatest anime of all time, and those interested in watching the series can stream it on Hulu via Disney+.
