Brie Larson Walking Out On Marvel After Terrible Movie Ratings?
Now that the world’s attention is on the immense box office failure of Madame Web, folks have stopped talking about Marvel’s last disappointing entry, The Marvels. One of the biggest box office blunders of the last year, the studio is scrambling to get back on its feet and is looking to Deadpool & Wolverine to be its saving grace. And, while she previously seemed quite optimistic about the outlook when it came to her involvement with the superhero franchise, Brie Larson gave a suspect comment that’s leading some to believe that the actress behind Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, will no longer be involved moving forward.
Brie Larson Has Nothing To Say About Marvel
At the SAG Awards, Brie Larson chatted to the press while on the red carpet. When she was asked by one outlet about any future Marvel projects, the Academy Award winner simply said, “I don’t have anything to say about that.” This completely shuts down any sort of further questions about the MCU from the conversation, putting a big question mark over Larson’s name for the future of the franchise.
The Marvels Underperformed
Though the leading ladies and its director, Nia DaCosta, went into The Marvels with high hopes, the film left a pox on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being one of three titles to drop during 2023. While James Gunn’s final installment in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, both The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were mega underperformers that shifted the way Marvel Studios will view their movies in the future.
In the recent past, DC Studios have been the ones facing low audience attendance and critically negative reviews with Marvel finally feeling some of that pain during 2023.
Captain Marvel’s MCU Future Once Shined Bright
For Brie Larson, the hate that The Marvels received undoubtedly dealt a major blow as it served as the second standalone feature for her character following 2019’s Captain Marvel. For the most part, the original title was a success both financially and critically, making it easy for Marvel to greenlight what would become the 2023 sequel. Just one month after Captain Marvel soared into theaters, Avengers: Endgame arrived, a movie that also featured peeks – albeit short – of Larson’s Carol Danvers.
MCU Retooling
Now that the future for the Avengers is up in the air as the studio lost their leading villain, Kang, after the actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault, Marvel is spinning its wheels pondering how to take a step in the right direction. With projects like Fantastic Four and Blade taking center stage and most of the attention, it makes sense why Brie Larson didn’t want to give too much away in terms of what lies ahead for Captain Marvel.
Brie Larson Outside Of Marvel
Right now, it would appear that Brie Larson is taking a well-deserved breather from memorizing lines and blocking, and pushing her body to the limit in action-packed gigs. Along with The Marvels, she recently led the Apple TV+ series Lessons in Chemistry, and joined the reunion of a lifetime, reprising her role (in a voice work capacity) as Envy Adams in Netflix’s anime, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Whether she’ll be spotted in future Marvel projects or she’ll call it quits and retire her Captain Marvel suit, there’s still going to be plenty of work out there for Brie Larson when she’s ready to pick it back up.
