Netflix Making Sequel To Sci-Fi Thriller Hit
Netflix previously revealed its 2024 movie lineup, and the list includes sequels to some of the most iconic movies, as well as some panned releases. We can expect the new Beverly Hill Cop: Axel Fox, the sequel to Rebel Moon, and Platform 2, a sequel to a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest.
The Platform Is Netflix’s Most Popular Spanish Movie
The original The Platform is easily Netflix’s most popular Spanish movie in the history of US streaming, racking more than 108 million viewing hours in its first 28 days, even though it nearly flopped at its national box office. Now, Netflix is looking to capitalize on the first film’s success, and the company announced a sequel, expressing its hope and will to extend The Platform universe with stories that are full of surprises, hurdles, and both new and old characters. Unfortunately, that’s about it when it comes to details regarding the upcoming The Platform 2.
The Platform 2 Is Expected This Year
The Platform 2 release date is currently on the “yet to be announced” part of the list, and apart from the list of directors, producers, and cast—the latter of which is limited to Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian alone—there’s not much to go around on. However, we can expect it to continue in the same tone as the previous movie. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the original film, The Platform premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won an award for Midnight Madness and secured a worldwide streaming deal with Netflix.
A Futuristic Prison With A Sadistic Twist
The narrative of the original The Platform is set in a large, tower-style prison, whose residents are switched between its many levels every month. The residents are fed via a platform, which, initially filled with food at the top floor, gradually descends through levels, stopping at each level for two minutes. Level residents can eat as much as they want or can in those two minutes but have to stop once the platform continues its descent. Any attempt to keep the food would result in exposure to fatal temperatures, so it’s not uncommon for those at lower levels to resort to cannibalism.
The Platform Symbolizes The Worst Of Humanity
This also means that the residents at the top levels get to eat as much as they can and often have their pick of the best food, with each level getting the leftovers from the previous ones. This naturally leads to conflicts between levels, which only drives the drama and horror aspects of The Platform, and we’re more than certain that The Platform 2 will continue in the same line as its predecessor. In the end, the original movie was a massive success everywhere, but in its home country, why change a recipe that obviously works?
When Can We Expect The Sequel?
Considering that we just got word of The Platform 2 being in development, the film is likely in its early stages of production, so you’ll have to stay tuned for more details as they arrive. Until then, you can catch up with the original on Netflix, though you might want to avoid doing so after meals.
