Batman Showing Up In Superman: Legacy?
Although he was a little cagey with his plans for Superman: Legacy at first, James Gunn has been more than happy to give fans updates on how the story is shaping up around the first film that will officially fall under his and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. Not at all impressed with the upper brass of X, Gunn took his business over to Instagram’s Threads. From there, he’s been answering our deepest questions with his latest reveal letting Batman fans down everywhere as the director and writer says the caped crusader will not appear in Superman: Legacy.
Gunn Says No Bat In This Belfry
From queries about screenwriting to filmmaking, James Gunn has used his platform to help out his fans in any way possible, which is why, when one follower asked, “Why can’t Batman appear in Superman Legacy and can we see Batman in some other production before his film?” Gunn was eager to answer. Dashing the hopes of even a cameo spot for Gotham’s defender in Superman: Legacy, Gunn forwardly answered, “Well he can’t appear in Superman Legacy because he’s not in the script.”
Could Batman Appear Before Superman: Legacy?
And just like that, all hope was gone. However, it is worth noting that while Gunn answered the first part of the fan’s question related to Superman: Legacy, he didn’t clear up the second about Batman appearing in a different production before Legacy. This could, of course, mean absolutely nothing – perhaps that Gunn was just in a rush and wanted to put the Batman rumors to sleep once and for all.
However, there’s also the possibility that there’s still something on the way between now and July 2025 that will see Batman return to the screen in one way or another before then.
The Batman 2
None of that is to say we won’t be getting some Batman relatively soon, but we’ll have to wait until after Legacy drops. Robert Pattinson is slated to return to the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’s sequel, The Batman 2, which won’trelease until after Superman: Legacy in October 2025. Not to mention that, like Joker, the narrative of Reeves’ Batman films fall outside the cinematic universe Gunn is crafting.
Is Batman KenOugh?
For now, we’ll take James Gunn at his word and try to relax and look forward to the ongoing cast announcements that seem to roll out daily for Superman: Legacy. The Batman rumors started flying a few months back when it was believed that Academy Award-nominee, Ryan Gosling (Barbie) would be the new caped crusader in Gunn and Safran’s DC. We can imagine that Gunn is getting pretty tired of answering these questions which is why he responded so bluntly and directly to the follower who asked about Batman’s appearance in Superman: Legacy.
What We Know
As for the rest of that stacked and growing cast, David Corenswet (Pearl) will don the cape of the titular hero in Superman: Legacy with other performances from Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced (Madame Web) as Hawkgirl, and more. Gunn has teased that in Superman: Legacy, which he is both penning and directing, audiences will be introduced to a Clark Kent (Corenswet) who has already stepped into his powers. This means that unlike other films we’ve seen in the past, Superman: Legacy will skip through the origin story and dig into the meat of Clark’s difficult time making his two different lives come together.
Superman: Legacy will fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025.
