Netflix Cancels Halle Berry Sci-Fi Thriller After Filming Finishes

It sounds as though Netflix is pulling a move previously made by those in control of Warner Bros. Discovery as it’s been announced that Halle Berry’s sci-fi thriller project with the streamer, The Mothership, has been pulled from its docket. While, in a post-writers’ and actors’ strike world, it isn’t too far-fetched of an idea that a major studio would cancel a production, the decision caught the attention of the entertainment industry as filming had already wrapped on the title.

Netflix Explains What Went Wrong

Because this looks an awful lot like what Warner Bros. has done with a multitude of projects, including Batgirl and Coyote v. Acme, which is canceling a finished project to collect a nice tax write-off, it sounds like the same can’t be said for The Mothership. Instead, Netflix cited its reasons for axing the sci-fi flick as being due to a “significant” amount of reshoots that would need to happen before it was ready to go live.

Too Much Time Has Passed

As more of an explanation was given, it became even more understandable why Netflix gave up on its Halle Berry-led film. Along with the reshoots taking up a lot of time, not to mention the financial strain it would put on financers, the project featured a handful of young cast members who have grown up over the last two years. Considering the mind-blowing differences in appearance that can happen for a child in two years, it makes sense that the cons outweigh the pros for reshooting parts of The Mothership.

The Award-Winning Team Behind The Mothership

As for the film that will never be, Netflix’s The Mothership was helmed and penned by Matt Charman, the writer behind Steven Spielberg’s thriller Bridge of Spies. Along with Halle Berry, the title was set to feature performances from Omari Hardwick (Army of the Dead), Molly Parker (Deadwood), and more.

What The Mothership Was About

Though we’ll never see Charman’s vision behind The Mothership, a previously released synopsis gives us a look into the sci-fi project. In the Netflix title, audiences would have met Berry’s Sara Morse, a grieving presumed widow whose husband mysteriously disappeared from their farm one year ago. Desperate to be a double parent to her children, Sara will stop at nothing to keep them safe but after finding an otherworldly item buried underneath their home, Sara realizes that her husband may be able to return after all.

Halle Berry Always Gives Her Best

We’re sure that the Oscar-winning actress would’ve given a terrific performance as the mama bear in Netflix’s The Mothership. Throughout the years, Halle Berry has given nothing but the best, even in the darkest situations (we’re looking at you, Catwoman).

Over the years, the big-name performer has starred in franchises like John Wick and X-Men, explored space in Moonfall, and brought drama to titles including Swordfish, Monster’s Ball, and Gothika. With The Mothership being scrapped, audiences’ next chance to catch Berry will be in Julian Farino’s action thriller, The Union

A Big Year For Netflix

Although its decision to leave The Mothership on the cutting room floor is certain to rub some subscribers the wrong way, Netflix still has plenty of upcoming titles – both in feature-length and series form – to keep audiences happy. This year, we will see shows land on the platform, including Griselda, Ripley, and The Gentlemen, with films like Damsel and Avatar: The Last Airbender on the way.
