Squid Game Season 2 Heading To Netflix Way Sooner Than Expected
Jonesing for more dystopian takes on classic playground games? Don’t worry, Netflix has you covered. Squid Game Season 2 is coming and it’s closer than you realize.
The South Korean Hunger Games has been a smash hit for the streamer—both as a scripted thriller and a reality gameshow. Squid Game: The Challenge had a controversial start but went on to be a slam-dunk for Netflix. Now in an effort to keep that momentum Netflix is releasing Squid Game Season 2 later this year.
Squid Game Season 2 Releasing This Year
In a recent letter to investors, Netflix announced its plans to release the second season of the popular show as part of a “Big, bold slate for 2024.” The streaming platform promised this “bold slate,” of programming despite delays caused by last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Considering Squid Game Season 1 is Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, Season 2’s imminent arrival is good news for investors and viewers alike.
Returning Stars
While Netflix didn’t give a specific date for the Season 2 premiere—the series has yet to start filming—we do know what familiar faces we’ll be seeing when it does. Obviously the Squid Game’s very nature doesn’t leave many Season 1 characters available to appear in Season 2 but there will be a handful of familiar faces. Lee Byung-hun will return to reprise his role as Season 1 protagonist Seong Gi-hun. Along with him will be Wi Ha-jun’s undercover cop Hwang Jun-ho, and nameless Squid Game recruiter Gong Yoo.
Hwang Dong-hyuk who wrote and directed Squid Game Season 1 will be back to direct and executive produce Season 2. With so much returning talent, it’s a good bet that the second season of the brightly colored, ultra-violent drama will be as good if not better than the first.
What To Expect In Season 2
Details for season 2 are scarce, but we can assume that Squid Game Season 2 will pick up where Season 1 left off, with Gi-hun attempting to find out the identity of the new person running the Squid Game. Hwang has stated that he wants Season 2 to focus on the story of the Front Man as well as exploring the police of this universe. “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea.” stated the creator.
More Of The Front Man
Hwang continued by saying that he’s observed on the global news that the hesitence of the police to act swiftly can result in “more victims” or a bad situation “getting worse.” “This was an issue that I wanted to raise,” said Hwang. The director also revealed that he wants Squid Game Season 2 to delve deeper into the relationship between the mysterious Front Man and his police officer brother, Hwang Jun-ho. Hwang also promised to explore the salesman character that tricks people into joining the game in the first place.
More Games To Come
There is no word on what childhood games Squid Game Season 2 will twist into life-or-death events for its sadistic competition. Personally, we’re kind of hoping for hopscotch or Red Rover, but that’s just us. No matter what nightmare versions of playground merriment the new season of Squid Game cooks up, we’re sure it will be nail-biting must-see television just like Season 1.
