Daisy Ridley Making Multiple Star Wars Movies?
Perhaps the most surprising Star Wars announcement in recent memory is that Daisy Ridley would be coming back to the franchise, reprising the role of Rey and headlining her own movie. Now, we’ve learned that when it comes to Rey’s cinematic return, this daughter of Emperor Palpatine is following the classic Sith rule: “always two there are.”
In addition to starring in her own solo film (one that will focus on Rey building a New Jedi Order), it sounds like Daisy Ridley may also appear in Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film.
Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order Movie
What do we know so far about Rey’s New Jedi Order movie? Honestly, aside from the fact that it will feature the return of Daisy Ridley attempting to rebuild the Jedi after she defeated Emperor Palpatine, very little is known about this movie. According to Kathleen Kennedy, the movie is intended to kick off a new era for the franchise, which only seems fitting.
A New Era
Back in the glory days of the Star Wars EU, the New Jedi Order books similarly focused on Luke Skywalker training the next generation of Jedi Knights and dealing with dangerous new threats other than the Galactic Empire.
We don’t know who Rey’s students will be or what kind of threats they will face now that the First Order has been defeated, but we’re eager to see what Daisy Ridley can do with a Star Wars film that (hopefully) doesn’t suffer from the rushed shooting schedules and general lack of planning that characterized the Sequel Trilogy.
Rey’s Film Will Be The First Star Wars Movie Directed By A Women
If nothing else, that movie will make franchise history: it is being directed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, officially making her the first female director of a Star Wars movie since Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie was canceled. This New Jedi Order film is being written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, and he’s on schedule to deliver a new draft very soon. In the meantime, Daisy Ridley just has to sit back and enjoy her lucrative return to Star Wars. She will be getting a cool $12.5 million for the movie, and this healthy payday is rumored to be tempting other Sequel Trilogy actors into returning for the film.
Daisy Ridley’s Part In The Shawn Levy Star Wars Film
Unfortunately, while we know very little about Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film, we know even less about the one Shawn Levy is working on. The Deadpool 3 director previously claimed that Kathleen Kennedy herself gave him plenty of creative freedom to create a film that reflected his unique style rather than one that fits the mold of a traditional Star Wars movie.
The fact that Daisy Ridley may appear in Levy’s film is actually the biggest recent news because it implicitly tells us that his movie, like the New Jedi Order movie, will be set in a time period shortly after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
Is More Of Daisy Ridley A Good Thing For The Franchise?
While Daisy Ridley has had some strident detractors over the years, we think her starring in multiple new Star Wars films is a good thing: it will allow talented directors to take the best aspects of the Sequel Trilogy (the talented cast and great characters) and ditch the worst aspects (the unoriginal plots and awful treatment of legacy characters).
This is the chance for Disney to get everything right the second time around and maybe (just maybe) have a bit more fun with this universe. Admit it: if Poe Dameron shows up and blurts out “somehow, Rey returned,” such self-awareness of previous bad writing may be enough to win back large chunks of the fandom.
