All The Star Trek Movies Currently In The Works
With the alarming rate at which we get updated on developing projects, shelved projects, series renewals, and series cancellations, it’s all but impossible to keep tabs on all of the intellectual properties that we love so much. This is especially true when it comes to Star Trek movies.
But after doing some digging, we’ve been able to track down the Star Trek movies that seem to be moving along and we thought it would be fitting to point your attention to the four projects that seem to have the most promise.
Section 31 Movie
One of the Star Trek movies that has been in development for quite some time is the Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yao (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
Though Section 31 was originally developed a series as early as 2019, it was announced in 2023 that the project has been green-lit as a movie instead. This project entered the pre-production phases in 2020, but faced myriad delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Production for this Star Trek movie would have ideally picked up in 2023, but the SAG-AFTRA strike delayed production once again.
Fortunately, word is out that filming commenced this month. Depending on the production schedule, we could potentially see a release date in late 2024 or early 2025.
JJ Abrams Star Trek Movie
The Star Trek reboot movies directed by J.J. Abrams have been another talking point among Trekkies.
Though 2016’s Star Trek Beyond was a fan-favorite franchise installment, it was not the commercial success Paramount Pictures thought it would be.
Despite being in development hell for years, Abrams has stated that the current iteration of the script is as compelling as the original 2009 reboot.
Chris Pine Has His Doubts
But we may be getting ahead of ourselves because the cast has yet to read the script. What’s more, Chris Pine has expressed his doubts about the future of this run of Star Trek Movies.
The high cost of getting the full cast involved may ultimately be a deterrent for Paramount to fund the project.
If the stars align and the project gets the green light, however, it will probably mark the conclusion of the film series that kicked off in 2009.
Prequel Star Trek Movie?
We can’t talk about Star Trek movies without exploring the possibility of a prequel installment. It was announced this past month that there an untitled prequel that occupies the Kelvin Timeline is currently in development.
Rumor has it that the movie will take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek movie, and could potentially occupy the same timeline as Strange New Worlds.
Thematically speaking, it’s been said that this upcoming Star Trek movie will explore darker territory like the Romulan or Klingon Wars.
Though we’re still waiting for some critical updates on this one, we do know that the script was written by Seth Grahame-Smith, and J.J. Abrams will produce the movie.
Patrick Stewart Returning For A Movie?
Though this final update isn’t as far along in development as the other Star Trek movies mentioned, it may be one of the most exciting.
On a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sir Patrick Steward himself announced that a new movie centered on Captain Jean-Luc Picard is in the works.
Picard’s Legacy
It’s worth mentioning that not much is known about the script for this upcoming movie, but it certainly sounds like it will be a character-driven film that explores the individual rather than the crew.
While this may end up being more of a contemplative project that puts a bookend on Picard’s legacy, it sounds like it will be an appropriate send-off for a significant character that was established in The Next Generation, and remained relevant through Picard’s third and final season in 2023.
