The Mandalorian And Grogu Movie Won’t Be For Newcomers
Disney has a long and storied history of making their expansive catalog difficult to follow for new fans. Outings such as Avengers: Endgame or The Book Of Boba Fett each require a semi-extensive knowledge of the existing characters and stories in order to fully follow along with the narrative, as each franchise continues to build into an unmanageable blob of content. According to Star Wars insiders, this looks to be the case for the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu film as well, as the movie is rumored to intersect with the plot of The Mandalorian‘s upcoming fourth, and perhaps final, season.
The announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu was met with great excitement by fans, but also great confusion and trepidation. Especially following the milquetoast response many viewers had for the third season of The Mandalorian, it seems unclear whether the film is meant to replace a potential fourth season or release alongside it in tandem. A fourth season of the hit Pedro Pascal-led series was previously planned to film last Fall, though the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes obviously prevented the project from staying on schedule.
Insiders had previously slated the fourth season of The Mandalorian for a February 2024 production start, though the new announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu has left many fans wondering if that schedule is still intact. There are currently no confirmed reports of the future of the series, though insiders have speculated that the fourth season of the Disney+ series will air alongside the film, together serving as a closing point for the story.
Of course, Star Wars has become such an enormous franchise consisting of multiple television series and feature film outings that we may see the Mandalorian and Grogu again in future installments. This is especially true if the series concludes with Grogu able to walk, talk, fight, and function as an adult character. For now, the only confirmation we have regarding the future of The Mandalorian series is an assurance by Jon Favreau that a fourth season had already been penned in full before season three was released last year.
It is entirely possible that both projects will go into active production in secret, as Disney has been known to obfuscate their plans to provide a spoiler-free viewing experience for their fans. Numerous insiders have attempted to reach greater clarity regarding the production schedule of The Mandalorian and Grogu to little avail, meaning most discussion on the topic is currently left to speculation.
For now, it seems that the most obvious course of action would be to send Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his ‘Baby Yoda’ companion off on a standalone adventure for the film, while the series continues to focus on the greater world of the Mandalorian race and creed.
This process already began in the third season of the show, where Pascal and other major players took a back seat in order to showcase the wider world of Mandalore. Conversely, The Mandalorian and Grogu may focus more on the whereabouts of the titular duo during the moments in the show’s third season that weren’t shown to audiences. For now, anything is possible, as fans eagerly await any updates from Lucasfilm executives.
