Nicole de Boer Returns To Star Trek As Captain Ezri Dax

Star Trek Online is about to boldly go back to the world of Deep Space Nine. The MMORPG—Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game—is kicking off its upcoming 31st season by bringing back Star Trek veteran Nicole de Boer to reprise her DS9 role as Ezri Dax. The new season of Star Trek Online will be the character’s first appearance in a Star Trek property since 2015’s Next Gen novel Takedown.

Gearbox Publishing and Cryptic Studios, the makers of Star Trek Online, made an announcement recently promising not just Nicole de Boer’s return but that of several other Trek alumni. The new season of Star Trek Online will be titled Both Worlds and will see the return of both Voyager‘s Captain Harry Kim (Garret Wang) as well as Admiral Kuumaarke (Kipleigh Brown) from the much-maligned Star Trek: Enterprise.

Both Worlds will launch on January 23, 2024, for PC and will launch on PlayStation and Xbox consoles on March 12, 2024.

Star Trek Online: Both Worlds

The official synopsis for Star Trek Online: Both Worlds promises a story that continues the multiverse saga that began last season. The story involved a misunderstanding between the Tholians and the Federation that resulted in the tearing of the Reality Vortex. Both Worlds will see the player infiltrating the Mirror Borg’s base of operations and attempting to restore the multiverse.

Ezri Dax’s appearances in the Star Trek universe following the end of Deep Space Nine have largely been confined to novels.

As amazing as the new season sounds, having Nicole de Boer back to voice Ezri Dax just makes it that much better. Ezri Dax was a late addition to the Deep Space Nine family following the passing of her predecessor, Commander Jadzia Dax, at the end of season 6.

Despite having the unenviable job of following the wonderful Terry Farrell, Nicole de Boer was able to make Ezri Dax a fan favorite and an integral part of the series last season.

The game’s 2018 expansion, Victory is Life, served as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of Deep Space Nine and, as a result, brought back several of that show’s stars.

Ezri Dax’s appearances in the Star Trek universe following the end of Deep Space Nine have largely been confined to novels. Starting with the DS9 Relaunch novels and moving from there to the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy, where she was an integral part of the final downfall of the Borg. Both Worlds will be Dax’s first speaking role in 25 years, thanks to the return of Nicole de Boer.

This is far from the first time Star Trek Online has brought back past Trek favorites. The free-to-play game featured Denise Crosby reprising her role as Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Tasha Yar as part of its first expansion pack, Legacy of Romulus. Online’s second major expansion, Delta Rising, brought back Jeri Ryan, Robert Picardo, and Ethan Phillips to voice their respective Star Trek: Voyager characters, Seven of Nine, the Doctor, and Neelix.

Nicole de Boer isn’t even the first Deep Space Nine actor to reprise their role for Star Trek Online. The game’s 2018 expansion, Victory is Life, served as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of Deep Space Nine and, as a result, brought back several of that show’s stars.

For fans who want to experience Nicole de Boer’s triumphant return to the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is free-to-play and is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
