The Netflix Action Crime Thriller Burns With Tension And Excitement
If you’ve seen any of director Taylor Sheridan’s work thus far, you may think that his 2021 release Those Who Wish Me Dead doesn’t fit into his body of work. In Sheridan’s former movies, Hell or High Water, Wind River, and Sicario, the writer/director thrives on presenting darkness and/or violence intruding on a pastoral landscape. Not this time.
Those Who Wish Me Dead
Those Who Wish Me Dead is a bit different from the rest of his films, as the driving point of the movie is the action and the chase. If you enjoy a good 90’s style, action-packed, bad guys versus good guys chase, then this is the movie for you.
The movie doesn’t really push to get much deeper than the struggles of the two main characters, but the characters are well-crafted.
Sheridan did a great job of getting viewers invested in the characters’ well-being before literally tossing them into the fire.
Angelina Jolie Stars
Those Who Wish Me Dead stars Angelina Jolie as a smokejumper (a badass firefighter who parachutes down into the apex of a fire to help gain control) who has recently suffered trauma from a mission.
Unfortunately, she was on a mission that ended in the death of three young boys whom she wasn’t able to reach in time to save. After the event, Hannah (Jolie’s character) was relegated to tower duty to regain her confidence and relax a bit.
Finn Little Also Stars
Finn Little is the other main character in Those Who Wish Me Dead. He plays an adolescent boy named Connor who is doing his best to escape a pair of assassins, Patrick (Nicholas Hoult) and Jack (Aiden Gillen).
The “bad guys” are aiming to recoup some “very damaging” information Connor has in his possession. The movie never explains exactly what kind of information Connor has, but you get the gist of its importance when assassins enter the picture.
Solving A Mystery, Kind Of
Then there’s Connor’s dad Owen (Jake Weber), Owen’s brother-in-law Ethan (Jon Bernthal), and Ethan’s wife Allison (Medina Senghore) who are also crucial to the story.
The whole debacle of Those Who Wish Me Dead begins when Owen (who works as a forensic accountant) finds some “things that don’t add up.”
After Owen’s boss is killed, the assassins begin coming after him to finish the job. Owen and Connor go on the run, and that’s when things get wild. The two are separated along the way, and Connor crosses paths with Hannah.
A Mission Of Protection
Hannah takes on the mission of protecting the boy from the assassins as the two work together to escape a raging forest fire (started by Jake and Patrick) and the bad men chasing them.
Of course, the new pair also end up getting a little help from Ethan and Allison amid their journey.
Great Audience Score
Though the movie was met with an underwhelming response at the box office, it does have an 86 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s certainly worth a good watch, and while it’s streaming on Netflix, Those Who Wish Me Dead is as far away as a few clicks on the remote.
