Netflix True Story Thriller Getting Oscar Notice
One of the latest Netflix outings, Society of the Snow, has been receiving a great deal of Oscar buzz in the few short weeks since the film premiered. In fact, the film has already made shortlist placements in a number of Oscar categories, signaling a near certainty that the movie will receive at least one nomination. The thriller is based on a harrowing true story and currently touts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 90 percent.
Society Of The Snow
Society of the Snow is currently available to stream on Netflix. The film first debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023 before seeing a brief theatrical run in countries including Uruguay, Spain, and the United States.
The film serves as an adaptation of Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name and details the true events of the 1972 Andes flight disaster.
The Andes Flight Disaster
The very same disaster serves as something of a loose inspiration for the hit Showtime series Yellowjackets, which also centers around a group of survivors after a flight crashes in the wilderness. In the true story covered by Society of the Snow, a flight from Uruguay to Chile went down in the Andes mountains, resulting in dozens of passengers dying on impact.
The surviving passengers were forced to take drastic measures to ensure that they wouldn’t succumb to exposure while living in the wilderness of the mountains for over 2 months.
Cast And Crew
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom filmmaker J.A. Bayona directs Society of the Snow and it stars a host of new and undiscovered talent sure to see a massive influx in offers based on their gripping performances.
The film was shot in several locations, including several scenes at the actual crash site where the flight went down in 1972. Spain optioned the film as their single pick for Best International Feature at the Oscars, making the film the shortlist.
Award Nominations
In addition to being listed for Best International Feature, Society of the Snow has also shortlisted for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Score.
While this doesn’t necessarily confirm a nomination or a win, it seems clear that the academy favors the film and certainly likely to get ahead once nominations are announced on January 26.
Other shortlisted films in the International category include Bhutan’s The Monk and the Gun, the UK’s The Zone of Interest, Finland’s Fallen Leaves, and Ukraine’s 20 Days in Mariupol.
Huge Win For Netflix
Society of the Snow may even be shortlisted in other categories, as only 10 of the 23 categories have unveiled their shortlists.
This stands as a big win for Netflix, as the streamer doesn’t currently have a large Oscar-buzz presence this year.
Despite some Netflix originals such as Rebel Moon and The Killer expected to make waves at the Academy Awards, the streamer is currently being outclassed by Apple TV+ with features such as Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon.
On Its Way
Society of the Snow currently holds the most shortlist appearances of any Netflix original film for 2023.
With any luck, the film may be on a fast track to a nomination, and perhaps even an Oscar Award.
