Steven Spielberg ’70s Crime Thriller Remake Almost Ready To Roll?

By Douglas Helm | Published

It seems that Steven Spielberg’s Bullitt reboot is back on track. The project was announced in 2022 but saw some update delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now producer Kristie Macosko Krieger has given us a promising update, telling GamesRadar, “I’m producing it,” adding, “Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, are working on the story.”

While projects sometimes go a long time between updates, the fact that Steven Spielberg and screenwrite Josh Singer are actively working on the film hopefully means they’re serious about getting it out. The film will also star Bradley Cooper, who is having his own prestige moment right now with the release of his second directorial effort, Maestro.

The Bullitt reboot is supposedly focusing on the same character, as made famous by Steve McQueen, but will tell a fresh story with Cooper in the lead this time.

Steve McQueen In The Original Bullitt

The Steve McQueen version of Bullitt came out way back in 1968 and starred McQueen as a San Francisco cop on the hunt for a mob boss who killed a witness he was protecting. Although Steven Spielberg has been keeping busy with his recent critically acclaimed efforts like West Side Story and The Fabelmans, Bullitt is definitely an exciting prospect for fans. It has been a long time since Spielberg has tackled a straight-up action film, so it’ll be fun to see what he can do with such a beloved character and IP.

Bradley Cooper Starring In The Remake

While Steven Spielberg is set to direct Bradley Cooper in Bullitt, this is far from the first time the two have crossed paths. Spielberg almost took on directing duties for Cooper’s American Sniper but eventually left the project. Spielberg was also in the process of possibly directing Maestro, though Cooper’s incredible directing debut, A Star is Born, convinced Spielberg that he should give Cooper the role of directing the film instead.

Steven Spielberg did stay on Maestro as a producer, but having Spielberg direct Bradley Cooper in a film like Bullitt is certainly something that moviegoers would look forward to seeing. Josh Singer is also joining in on the fun, as he actually penned the script for Maestro. So, we’ll have Spielberg behind the camera, Singer working on the script, and Cooper in front of the camera.

Bradley Cooper In Maestro

This creative team seems like a recipe for cinematic success, and this should only build hype for Steven Spielberg’s version of Bullitt. In the meantime, Bradley Cooper is likely going to continue basking in the critical success of his film Maestro. Cooper directs and stars in the film as legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, and he has already nabbed four Golden Globe nominations for his efforts.

Maestro Is Streaming On Netflix

It seems almost inevitable that Maestro will also have a few Oscar nominations coming its way. Of course, Steven Spielberg is no stranger to the Oscars either, so perhaps their collaboration on Bullitt could lead to some additional nominations for both of them the year it is released. Maestro is now streaming on Netflix if you want to check out Cooper’s latest effort.Source: GamesRadar
