Jonathan Majors Verdict Won’t Include Severe Sentence?
The judicial process certainly wasn’t drawn out in a lengthy way for Jonathan Majors as a New York City jury found the actor guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree earlier this week.
Now that he’s received the guilty verdict on both of these counts, sentencing will take place in early February where a judge will hand down his punishment. While he could be facing up to a year in prison, it’s more likely that he’ll face a less harsh sentencing.
Not Likely To Receive Any Jail Time
Many legal professionals believe that Jonathan Majors won’t see the inside of a jail or be fitted for an orange suit anytime soon as the misdemeanor and violation that he was charged with are the first such marks on his record. Instead, Cary London, a Manhattan-based civil rights and criminal defense attorney, says that there’s a “99 percent” chance that the judge will instead slap him with “three years probation, anger management and possibly some community service.”
Likely To Appeal The Verdict
There’s also a very slim yet possible chance that Jonathan Majors will appeal the verdict and bring in an entirely new legal team. According to those close to the process, Majors’ legal team made several mistakes during the trial, something that the actor may claim is grounds for an appeal. With his career hanging in the balance, it would be a risky move to appeal the conviction although – at this point – he has nothing left to lose after being dropped from Marvel Studios.
The Incident That Started It All
The case has been ongoing for almost a year when, back in March, Jonathan Majors’s then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, filed a police report against him for domestic abuse. The allegations stemmed from a night out on the town during which the couple was riding in a private car and Jabbari says she spotted romantic texts from another woman on Majors’ phone. When she tried to take the phone to see what was going on, Jabbari claimed that Majors assaulted her while attempting to reclaim his phone.
While it was challenging for Jabbari’s legal team to prove their side of what happened in the back of that car, there was plenty of other damning evidence that put the nail in Jonathan Majors’s coffin. Particularly sets of texts from other instances that showed that – at the very least – the actor had a habit of handling things angrily.
His Hollywood Career Is Most Likely Over
Regardless of the ruling or how Jonathan Majors and his legal team decide to move forward with the information they’re given, the damage has likely already been done to his career. The actor has long been building up in the MCU as the franchise’s next big bad following the destruction of Josh Brolin’s Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror, played a major role in the wildly successful Disney+ series Loki and was given a platform in this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Marvel’s Plan To Replace Kang
Marvel has been majorly pivoting its platform and lineup of projects since the guilty verdict was passed down on Jonathan Majors earlier this week. The next ensemble Avengers movie was set to be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but the studio is doing a major backpedal on this, rebranding it as Avengers 5. As of right now, it looks like Majors is out of the franchise for good, no matter how much he may try to rebuke his current verdict.Source: The Hollywood Reporter
